Is it necessary to have you tested for inflammation?

Let's be honest: inflammation has a terrible rep. Much of it is justifiable. Long-term inflammation, after all, is linked to chronic illnesses and death. If you just depended on headlines for health information, you may conclude that stamping out inflammation would abolish cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, and perhaps ageing itself. Unfortunately, this isn't the case.

Nonetheless, our understanding of how chronic inflammation might harm one's health has vastly improved in recent years. Three common questions arise as a result of this understanding: Is it possible that I have inflammation without realizing it? How can I tell if I have it? Is it possible to test for inflammation? Yes, there are some.

Memory loss screening at home: SAGE Test

55 million individuals are estimated to suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia throughout the world. This figure will rise from 78 million by 2030 to 139 million by 2050. They can't be diagnosed since there aren't enough professionals in the fields of psychiatry, neuropsychology, and geriatric medicine. Physicians in primary care will be responsible for implementing the plan.

I know this may seem like a no-brainer, but my friends who work in primary care remind me that they hardly have time to handle the essentials, like blood pressure and diabetes, let alone give complex cognitive tests. Even if it's simple, the Mini-Cog (clock drawing and three words to memorize) is too long for them, no matter how enjoyable it is. Is there any way we can predict how many people will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in the next few decades?

As compared to normal neuropsychological testing, the self-administered Gerocognitive
Examination (SAGE) has been found to be a useful tool for assessing cognitive function in the elderly. SAGE didn't know how well it could predict Alzheimer's disease or other types of dementia at the time.

Memory loss can be detected using a self-administered test.

The Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination (SAGE) has performed well in comparison to clinician-administered tests like the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), as well as routine neuropsychological testing. As far as how well SAGE could predict who would get Alzheimer's disease or another kind of dementia, there was no way to know.

The best luxury birthday cake designs 2022.

28 Luxury birthday cake designs to add the extra touch to your day

What's the point of a birthday party if the centrepiece isn't the cake? No matter how old you are, there's nothing like blowing out the candles, cutting the cake, and taking in all the love and attention from those you care about. As of late, cakes have taken on a newfound significance as a symbol of social status, prestige, and fulfilment. Cakes are no longer just desserts in today's society; they've become an integral part of the whole decor!

Whether it's your own or a loved one's birthday, these creative and delicious cake designs will leave you speechless!

What Is The Origin Of The Cake Tradition?

Let us first satisfy our insatiable appetite for cake-related trivia before moving on to the photos. It is widely thought that the cake tradition predates the invention of the current birthday cake. A cake-like flatbread was used by the Romans to mark major events such as birthday parties for royalty and marriages for their loved ones.

In the 17th century, bakers came up with the idea of a single-tiered birthday cake decorated with icing and embellishments. Friends and family sang the traditional "Happy Birthday" song, followed by a big round of applause, before cutting the cake.

Cakes are a symbol of joy, love, and togetherness. Thus, when it comes time to celebrate your birthday, make sure your loved ones bring one along.

What are the benefits of working together?

The benefits of teamwork

The study, which looked at 284 students from all over the country, found that collective environmental action, but not individual actions, was linked to a decrease in depression symptoms.

When these web-based surveys were done between October and December 2020, most universities were implementing remote learning in response to COVID-19, and there may have been more political anxiety in the run-up to the November 2020 election.

In terms of qualitative feedback, no participant mentioned climate change actions without also expressing their concerns. Climate anxiety is about a wide range of things, like environmental damage, collective inactivity, global human suffering, and individual pain.

The study also found a link between more individual climate action and more collective climate activism.

The fact that this survey had three gender options was a good thing, given how often this is a problem with studies.

Learning to find your focus

Your brain is a three-pound supercomputer with a near-limitless capacity for learning, memory, and problem-solving. People may lose the ability to do a variety of cognitive functions over time, most notably their ability to concentrate and focus.

"This can make it more difficult to remember vital medical information, manage personal finances, and follow specific orders.

Fortunately, there are methods for maintaining your undivided attention. Listed below are several strategies.

Should I keep exercising if I'm not losing weight?

For 40 years, I've attempted to lose weight through exercise. I take brisk walks for approximately two to three hours each week, as you instruct. However, I'm on the verge of quitting since I'm unable to lose enough weight to make the exercise worthwhile. Is there another reason why I should continue?

Yes. There is. Continue exercising even if you are unable to achieve a healthy weight. Why? Because consistent exercise has huge health benefits, even if you are unable to maintain a healthy weight. This idea is supported by a new comprehensive study of the health benefits of regular exercise, which will be published in the journal Science on October 22, 2021.

Regular exercise keeps you physically fit, and being physically fit lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and premature death - even if you can't lose weight. Here are the statistics compiled from numerous research that followed thousands of people over many decades, including several studies undertaken at Harvard Medical School.

If you are overweight and unfit, your chance of dying prematurely is twice that of someone of the same age and gender who is likewise overweight but remains active. The same holds true if your weight is within a healthy range: staying fit lowers your risk. If we were talking about your risk of a heart attack, stroke, diabetes, or Alzheimer's disease instead of your chance of premature death, the same general principle would apply: regular exercise will minimize your risk, even if you can't achieve a healthy weight.

How to Make Exercise Fun: Tips to Get You Moving

We all know that exercise is essential, but sometimes it's just hard to get moving. It can be tough to find the motivation to lace up your sneakers and hit the gym when you're tired or stressed out. That's why it's so important to make exercise fun! This blog post will discuss a few tips that will help you get moving and have some fun while you're at it.

Mix It Up

One of the best ways to make exercise fun is to mix things up. It can get tedious if you're always doing the same workout routine. Instead, try mixing things up and trying new activities. There are so many different types of exercise out there, so find something that you enjoy by pushing it all. You can even switch things up daily to keep your body and mind guessing.

Make It Social

Another great way to make exercise fun is to make it social. Instead of working out alone, find a buddy or two to join you. You can even sign up for group fitness classes together. This is a great way to stay accountable and motivated, and it's also a lot of fun. You can even turn your workout into a competition to see who can burn the most calories. Arrange a sports day with friends and family. For example a softball day, you can custom make a softball tee for yourself and your team to make it more fun.

Happy Birthday to my niece, Crystal.

Yesterday, the 23rd of March 2022, was my little niece's birthday. I remember how many times she told me about her birthday. She told me what gifts she wanted for her birthday and what colour of cake she would love. She requested a pink cake, and I'm delighted I was able to fulfil her requests.

Her birthday fell on a school day, so she had to go to school, which is when I took advantage of the situation and decorated the living room so she could come home to a surprise. I am very pleased with how successfully I pulled it off. From colourful balloons to other birthday party decorations, she was overjoyed.

I was delighted to see her smile, and she seemed to like her gifts. My mother and two siblings joined us for the celebration. I pray that her smile never ends.

Yes, you can stick to an exercise regimen

Yes, it is possible to maintain an exercise plan!

Increase the impact of your intentions by implementing easy tactics that will help you stay on track.

The start of a new year inspires a new resolution. However, if this is the year you finally commit to starting and maintaining an exercise routine, you'll need strategies to support your good intentions. "Research indicates that humans have finite stores of willpower, which are strained by numerous facets of life, such as eating a balanced diet or performing domestic chores. If you deplete your willpower in one area, you will have less to expend in others," Rachel Wilson, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital, explains.

Discover an activity that you enjoy.

"If you don't enjoy your workout, you're going to struggle to stay motivated in the long run," Wilson says. Experiment with several forms of exercise until you find one that works for you. Inquire of pals what type of exercise they enjoy and whether you can tag along to give it a try. Wilson suggests starting with easy activities such as walking, biking, or enrolling in classes oriented at beginner exercisers. Bear in mind that "exercise" can entail everything from playing with grandchildren to briskly strolling without breaking a sweat.

Establish objectives

Taking it one workout at a time is less intimidating than committing to an impossible goal that will cause you to quit. "Make short-term fitness objectives that you can track for four to eight weeks, such as walking 1,000 additional steps each day or increasing your workout duration by a few minutes," Wilson advises. Once you've established a regular exercise routine, set long-term goals.

If you're returning to exercise after a lengthy period of inactivity or if you've never exercised before, consult your physician first. Then, employ several of the following tactics to maintain your commitment to a healthier lifestyle.

Make time for exercising.

Establishing and adhering to a formal fitness program will hold you more accountable than simply thinking about exercising. Wilson recommends exercising early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Avoid leaving it till the end of the day, when you're out of time and steam.

Southern side dishes for the month

Certain Southern meals, such as barbecued pork, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes, are not exactly healthful. Indeed, research has connected Southern-style meals strong in meat and fried foods to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, traditional Southern food includes a variety of side dishes made with nutritious components such as vegetables, beans, and whole grains. They can be combined to create a complete, meatless dinner that is both filling and enjoyable. Serve two or more of the following concurrently.

Greens. Collard greens are traditional, but you can substitute other robust greens such as kale, chard, or cabbage. Stir-fry in olive oil with garlic cloves. To enhance the flavour, add a splash of your favourite vinegar and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.

How to stay coordinated and strong as you age

So many physical attributes deteriorate with normal aging, including strength, swiftness, and stamina. In addition to these muscle-related reductions, there are additional alterations that occur in coordinating the motions of the body. As a result of these changes, you may find that you are unable to accomplish activities like dashing to catch a bus, walking around the garden, going grocery shopping and bringing them inside the house, maintaining your balance on a slippery surface, or playing catch with your grandchildren as well as you once could. However, must these activities deteriorate? Consider why these reductions occur—and what you might do to reclaim your strength and coordination.

Changes in your strength

Age-related declines in strength, speed, and stamina are all connected with decreased muscle mass. Although muscle mass does not diminish significantly between the ages of 20 and 40, after age 40, lean body mass and strength can decline by 1% to 2% per year.

Muscle mass loss is associated with both a decrease in the number of muscle fibers and a decrease in fiber size. They die if the fibers become too tiny. Fast-twitch muscle fibers contract and die at a faster rate than other muscle fibers, resulting in a loss of muscular speed. Additionally, the ability of muscles to repair themselves reduces with age. One element contributing to these changes is a decrease in muscle-building hormones and growth factors such as testosterone, estrogen, dehydroepiandrosterone (often referred to as DHEA), growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factors.

Coordination changes

Coordination changes are less a function of muscles and more a function of the brain and neurological system. Multiple brain centers must be linked in order for you to perform tasks ranging from golfing to holding a coffee cup steady as you walk across a room. This emphasizes the critical nature of the brain's wiring, the so-called white matter that connects the various brain regions.

Unfortunately, the majority of persons over the age of 60 who consume a western diet and do not exercise regularly have some small "ministrokes" (also known as microvascular or small vessel disease) in their white matter. Although the strokes are unnoticeable when they occur, they can damage connections between critical brain coordination centers such as the frontal lobe (which directs movement) and the cerebellum (which provides on-the-fly corrections to those movements as needed).

Additionally, as you age, you lose dopamine-producing cells, which can delay your movements and impair your coordination; thus, even if you do not get Parkinson's disease, many people develop some of the movement abnormalities associated with Parkinson's.

Finally, vision changes—the "eye" aspect of hand-eye coordination—are critical. Eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration are substantially more prevalent in older persons. Additionally, modest visual impairment might be the first indicator of aging-related cognitive problems, such as Lewy body disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Do allergies make snoring worse?

Is it true that allergens aggravate snoring?

If your sleeping companion claims that your snoring gets worse when your allergies flare-up in the spring. Is there a link, and if so, what can you do about it?

A. Allergies that produce nasal congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose (also known as allergic rhinitis) can cause snoring to become more frequent and louder. Allergic rhinitis, in fact, is a prevalent but under-recognized cause of poor sleep quality. Sleep disturbances, such as sleep apnea, are more common in patients with moderate to severe allergic rhinitis. This can cause daytime drowsiness, weariness, and mood and memory problems.

How to reduce lasting menopausal symptoms?

Consult your doctor.

My last menstrual period was four years ago, yet I'm still experiencing hot flashes and night sweats. Is this typical, and are there other treatments other than hormones that could help me?

A. While many women experience menopausal symptoms for a short period of time, others may experience symptoms for years after their menstrual cycles have stopped. Heart palpitations, vaginal dryness, night sweats, hot flashes, sleep disruptions, and mood disorders such as depression and anxiety are all possible.

There are various non-hormonal approaches that may be beneficial. Those that help you stay cool are some of the greatest solutions for hot flashes and nocturnal sweats. Dress in layers so you can rapidly remove clothing to change your body temperature; put a small fan nearby that you can turn on as needed; use cool-water compresses on your skin; maintain your bedroom at a lower temperature at night, and wear light clothing to bed (ideally made of fabrics designed to wick away moisture). In addition, make an effort to exercise on a regular basis. It has been demonstrated to lower overall menopausal symptoms and may assist in enhancing your sleep quality. Also, make an appointment with your doctor. Depending on what she can do, she may be able to give you more options for therapy and rule out other health problems that could be causing your pain.

Despite hand pain, typing and tapping

Do you find it difficult to use your smartphone or computer because your hands are stiff? If you want to keep utilizing your gadgets, try these tips.

Pexel image

Thanks to technology, the world is at your fingertips. All it takes is a few taps on a smartphone, a few keystrokes on a keyboard, or a few mouse clicks. That is more difficult to do if you have other health problems, like tendinitis or arthritis, that makes it worse.

"The issue is repetitive finger movement on a keyboard or reaching and stretching your fingers on a mouse. A hand keeps moving, and the other hand keeps holding a phone in the other.

If you have pain or stiffness in your hands that makes it hard to use a computer or smartphone, think about the following steps. Make sure these suggestions are right for you by talking to your doctor.

Distribute the work.

Do you type in a "hunt and peck" fashion? Are you a thumb-only texter? This may result in overuse injuries. Rather than that, divide the task between your fingers and hand. "Change which fingers perform the work. If you're used to using a mouse exclusively with your right hand, try mousing with your left. Alternatively, switch which hand you use to carry your smartphone. "

Take pauses

Sedentary activity: using a computer or smartphone stops you from being active and cuts off the blood flow to your hands, making them stiff and hard to move.

To combat this, schedule breaks in advance of feeling the desire to stop. You've already aggravated your hands by the time they complain. It takes longer to regain control of the pain and stiffness, and you end up needing a longer respite. After 45 minutes of action, take a five-minute break. Stand up, take a drink of water, or perform any other action that significantly alters your position. "

Extend the range of motion in your wrists and hands.

It is critical to have limber wrists and hands. They should be stretched on a regular basis. Begin at your wrists, with your forearms stationary and your fists slowly rotating in circles. Following that, softly open and close your fists, if possible, lengthening your fingers. "Ensure that all of your fingers are aligned and working in unison and that no finger is ahead of or behind others, as is the case with arthritis."

Utilize either heat or cold therapy.

Both heat and cold therapy have their advantages and disadvantages. Heat is a sedative that relaxes the muscles. It's beneficial to do so before typing or using your phone for a lengthy period of time. It helps with stiffness but not with swelling. "Moist heat penetrates the tissues and joints more deeply. You can obtain moist heat by soaking your hands in warm water or by microwaving moist heat mittens. "

Ice is a natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic. "It is very beneficial for tendonitis or inflamed heated joints. It's beneficial if you've been using your hands for an extended period of time. Consider using an ice pack, cold therapy gloves (made with gel packs stored in the freezer), or soaking your hands in freezing water. Keep therapy sessions to a maximum of 20 minutes so that you don't cause your skin to get hurt.

Could cataract surgery protect against dementia?

Is it possible that cataract surgery can protect you from dementia?

Cataract surgery has become extremely safe and commonplace in the United States over the last few decades. An estimated two million Americans, largely seniors, undergo this treatment each year. By 2050, the population may have doubled, or perhaps tripled.

Even though many of us think that cataract surgery only helps us see better, new research shows that it may also help us think better and avoid dementia.

According to research, there is a link between eyesight loss and dementia.

Recent studies have discovered a relationship between dementia and age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, or diabetes-related eye illness. In one study, elderly people whose vision deteriorated during an eight-year period had a higher chance of dementia.

So, may preventing or correcting vision loss help to lessen dementia risk? Previous research has yielded conflicting results. According to a 2015 study, cataract surgery is connected to a lower risk of dementia in the future. The results of a 2018 study found no benefit in terms of dementia risk, but there was a lower rate of mild cognitive impairment. The disparities in findings could be explained by differences in study populations and techniques, particularly in the diagnosis of dementia.

There's new evidence that cataract surgery can help people avoid dementia.

A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that removing cataracts may lower your risk of dementia. It looks into how cataract surgery affects the risk of dementia over time in over 3,000 older people with cataracts or glaucoma. At the start of the trial, no one had dementia.

According to the research,

People who had cataract surgery had a 29% lower risk of developing dementia than those who did not.

Whether glaucoma patients had surgery or not, the risk of dementia was the same. (It's worth noting that glaucoma surgery doesn't help you see again.)

Because of differences in health or access to health care, the study's findings were not likely to be caused by those things. Also, other dementia risk factors were not likely to have been the cause. The findings remained the same once these variables were taken into account.

The researchers point out that while the findings are compelling, they must be confirmed by others. Future research should involve a more varied population: the majority of study participants were white, and they all had easy access to complete health care, including cataract surgery.

There is currently no safe place in Ukraine, and the situation is changing by the hour. All children across the region are now in grave danger of physical harm and severe emotional distress.

So please, let’s do what we do best: let’s gather together our network of friends, family and colleagues and fundraise for the innocent children of Ukraine.

Violence and explosions have been reported in the capital of Kyiv and other major cities – forcing children and families into basements and bomb shelters. 5 Ways to Help Children and Teens Learn Resilience

5 Ways to Teach Children and Adolescents Resilience

It would be an understatement to say that the last two years have been difficult for children and teenagers. Major worldwide events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have had an impact on our daily lives and put us to the test in unprecedented ways. Racial and political issues are also constants in the lives of young people of all ages.

Parents have a plethora of concerns and inquiries. What does all of this anxiety, instability, isolation, and change imply for my children? How can I assist them in coping? Will they be alright? The good news is that resilience, or the ability to persevere in the face of adversity and stress, can be learned and strengthened at any age. We can't keep our children from feeling unhappy, stressed, or having setbacks. We can, however, cultivate their ability to cope with and learn from adversity when it is possible.

How can families help their children develop resilience?

The relationship between parent and child, which is a significant contributor to healthy development in children and teenagers, is where resilience begins for every one of us. A safe, stable relationship with at least one caring and responsive adult is a powerful stress buffer, according to research on childhood trauma such as exposure to violence, divorce, mourning, and natural disasters. Recent research suggests that teenagers who feel linked to their parents or other caregivers, as well as their friends, and who have stable daily routines, are better able to cope with COVID-related stress (read more here, here, and here).

Parents may foster their children's resilience in five evidence-based approaches as we navigate the shifting demands of the pandemic (note: automated download) and the difficulties of our times.
