Rumination : Practicing Emotional Hygiene

Rumination is obsessively over-thinking or replaying mentally a past negative event again and again but make no real progress toward what we are thinking about. Ruminating can also be said to be simply repetitively going over a thought or a problem without completion. This is a clear symptom of depression. If anyone gets depressed rumination comes into play, it gives you a feeling of inadequacy and worthlessness. Nevertheless, this never gets issues solved and we all have one time in our lives gone through this stage of life and can testify that it feels really bad and sad.

Each time we have an issue with ourselves or other people we can't just stop thinking about it. The danger of this is that it can easily become a habit which is so unhealthy because when so much time is focused on upsetting a negative thought you are actually putting yourself at significant risk of developing clinical depression, alcoholism, eating disorders and even cardiovascular diseases.

The urge to ruminate can be very strong but one thing is sure, you are stronger because you can be in total control of your mind. One cure to negative thoughts is having a positive mind towards what you are thinking about. There are a lot of people who are physically healthy but psychological they are sick. Studies have shown that even a two minutes distraction can break the urge to ruminate. The very best way to overcome rumination is by forcing/distracting ourselves with other positive activities and by so doing, we are able to battle negative thinking.
Our quality of life can rise dramatically if we all start practising emotional hygiene. Imagine how lovely it this world would be if everyone was psychologically healthy if there were less lonely people, less depression if people knew how to overcome failure if they felt better about themselves and more empowered if they were happier and more fulfilled.

By taking actions when you are lonely, by changing your response to failure, by protecting yourself esteem and by battling negative thinking, you will not just heal your psychological wounds but you will also build emotional resilience and you will also strive through any situation and come out even stronger and victorious.

There different ways in which we can prevent rumination and stop the habit of ruminating.

1. Drink a cold glass of water: Water is not just to keep our body going daily but water purifies our mind, calms our minds and helps reduce stress.

2. Your facial expression and the mirror: A closer look at yourself in the mirror will give you a clear glance and picture of your facial expression. The mirror isn't just a beauty tool but also serves as a tool to draw our attention to who we are, remind us of how wonderful we are and also tells us what our facial expression is. If you are frowning you might not even notice until you look in the mirror. Fix your body language, try to smile even in that situation. This can help you feel much better.

3. Speak positively to yourself: When speaking to yourself you find a friend and a companion, this reduces how lonely you feel at the moment. Those fearful thoughts in your mind, let them out. Putting things into words can help you get the solution to your problems sometimes. What is the worst thing that can happen? Ask yourself this question.

4. Take a walk: Do you have a pet? take a walk with your pet, watch how easy going your pet is at the moment. Encourage yourself with the emotions of your pet. If you do not have a pet you can also take a walk to change your environment because our thoughts are sometimes a product of our environment. Go to a place which can uplift your spirit in a positive way. Avoid drinking and smoking they have never solved any problems.

5. Be thankful: We all have times in our lives when everything seemed right and we were so happy because it felt like paradise. Reflect on your achievements and all the good things you have and always remember that being able to see another day is a great reason to be happy and thankful.

I do know that looking within and fighting those negative thoughts are the two best ways I have found to overcome becoming a victim.
