Just in case you didn't know, I get sent books by different publishers quite often, which means I constantly get to dive into different genres and stories. I haven't completed every single page in this stack just yet, but I wanted to walk you through each one, share my initial reactions, and give you a taste of what makes each title so impossible to put down.
Before we even get into the plots, I have to confess something: I am a total book collector at heart.
One day, I am hoping to build my very own dream library. A proper, rich wooden library filled top-to-bottom with gorgeous spines and special editions. My dad has always loved libraries, and that appreciation definitely rubbed off on me. There is just something magical about having a dedicated room where stories line the walls—and trust me, this new set is going to take pride of place on those future wooden shelves.
The Spotlight: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (After Dark Edition)
Look at this edition! The book I’m reviewing and obsessing over today is the brand-new After Dark Edition of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
If you are an aesthetic book lover like me, this one will make your jaw drop. It features a striking new cover design where the intense, fiery red pops violently against a deep, moody black background. Coupled with the gorgeous typography and those dramatic black sprayed edges, it looks like an absolute piece of art.
This is the New York Times No. 1 bestselling YA crime thriller by Holly Jackson that took TikTok by storm and went on to become a major BBC and Netflix series!
I was lucky enough to receive all four books in the series, and I want to give each one its own moment in the spotlight.
A Quick Word on the Mastermind: Holly Jackson
Before we go into the books, we have to talk about Holly Jackson for a wee bit. She has this unbelievable talent for writing high-stakes, fast-paced suspense that respects the reader's intelligence. She doesn't just write a whodunit; she gives you interview transcripts, voice notes, map sketches, and diary entries so you feel like you are standing right beside the main character, Pippa "Pip" Fitz-Amobi, solving the crime in real-time.
The Book Breakdown: Give Each One Its Moment
1. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (Book 1 – The OG Classic)
The Vibe: High school investigation, dark small-town secrets, instant addiction.
The Hook: Five years ago, popular schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh. The police closed the case. The whole town knows Sal did it. Case closed... right?
My Reaction: Pip Fitz-Amobi isn't convinced. Under the guise of a final-year school project, she decides to re-examine the case. Joining forces with Sal’s younger brother, Ravi, Pip starts pulling at threads that the town desperately tried to bury. The moment you start reading Pip's case notes, your pulse starts racing. You realize the real killer might still be walking those same streets, and they know Pip is digging. I was flipping pages so fast my thumbs hurt!
2. Kill Joy (The Prequel Novella)
The Vibe: 1920s murder mystery party, playful tension, the spark of a detective.
The Hook: Before the real murder cases, there was just a fancy-dress dinner party.
My Reaction: Pip really doesn't want to attend her friend’s 1920s-themed murder mystery game. She’d rather be studying! But once the game begins and she assumes her role, something switches on inside her. Watching Pip tease out clues to solve the fictional murder of "Reginald Remy" gives you goosebumps because you are watching the exact moment an amateur sleuth is born. It’s light, fun, atmospheric, and the absolute perfect bite-sized prequel.
3. Good Girl, Bad Blood (Book 2)
The Vibe: True-crime podcast gone viral, clock-is-ticking panic.
The Hook: Pip created a true-crime podcast about the case she solved in book one, and it went completely viral. She swore she was done playing detective for good... until a close friend’s brother goes missing.
My Reaction: This book took my anxiety levels and turned them up to ten! Jamie Reynolds vanishes on the night of a local memorial, and the police refuse to do anything because he's an adult. Pip has no choice but to break her promise to herself. Listening to the investigation unfold through her podcast updates feels so real and urgent. You feel the heavy weight of how real-life fame and dark secrets collide.
4. As Good As Dead (Book 3)
The Vibe: Psychological stalker terror, dark thriller, the ultimate showdown.
The Hook: "Who will look for you when you're the one that disappears?"
My Reaction: Chills. Absolute chills! Pip is heading off to university soon, trying to recover from the trauma of her previous cases. Then the threats start. At first, it's online comments, but soon it's chalk drawings in her driveway and dead birds on her doorstep. When Pip realizes her stalker is connected to a local serial killer, she knows the police won't save her. This book is so raw, psychological, and intense—it completely flips the script on what you expect from a YA thriller!
Have you read any of Holly Jackson's books yet, or watched the series on Netflix/BBC iPlayer? Let me know down in the comments which cover look you prefer—the classic original or this dark, dramatic After Dark edition!

This sounds like something I would enjoy reading too!

DeleteThis is a killer post.
ReplyDeleteHaha pun intended? 😉 Thank you! Appreciate you stopping by to read.
DeleteI've already read the first book in the series and I liked it. It's written in an original way and really captivates the reader. This edition is very beautiful; I don't think I've seen it for sale here yet.
ReplyDeleteIt really is written in such a unique way! Those transcripts and case notes made it feel so real. And right?! This After Dark edition is such a stunner in person. Hopefully it drops near you soon.
DeleteGracias por tus sugerencias. Hace tiempo que leo poca novela negra o policiaca...
ReplyDeleteUn saludo, amiga
You're so welcome! If you ever do decide to jump back into crime fiction, this is a super easy, fast-paced series to restart with.
DeleteLove the covers Melody they really stand out.
ReplyDeleteI've read part of her first book and enjoyed it, must finish it.
Take care.
Thank you! Honestly, the covers are what pulled me in first, but the plot delivers just as much. Hope you get to finish it soon! Have a great week!
Delete謝謝推介.
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome! Let me know what you think of it when you do give it a try!
DeleteA nice pack of books you have here. :) My friend send me a full big box of different books that she had wanted to give away, so I have enough to read for the whole summer. ;p But still, this book you rewieved seems worth reading so I am making a note of the tittle and author for later. :)
ReplyDelete"She doesn't just write a whodunit" :D :D :D "Whodunit" :D :D :D That's just brilliant :D :D :D
Haha! You gotta love a classic whodunit! 😂 That is so awesome about your friend's book delivery though, there's nothing better than a free summer book haul. Happy reading, and hope you get to Holly Jackson eventually!
DeleteSon una buena muestra de la novela negra y no lo digo por el color de las tapas y los cantos de las hojas.
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
Haha, totally fair! The aesthetic is amazing, but the actual storytelling and pacing are what really sell it. Good crime fiction has to deliver on the plot, and Holly Jackson definitely does.
DeleteThese seems like great novels, thank you for sharing your reviews. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder sounds especially interesting, with its murder mystery and all that.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! If you only pick up one from the stack, make it A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, the mystery keeps you guessing right up until the end. Hope you enjoy it if you give it a read!
DeleteCalculating that I always say that I am lucky because mental murders are not prosecutable, I always thought that as a killer I would be awful, I would lose hair and leave traces everywhere but it is definitely an interesting book!
ReplyDeleteLOL, valid! The trace evidence alone would undo me immediately. But that’s why reading about characters who actually know what they’re doing is so much fun!
DeleteGreat books reviews.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Thanks a lot! So glad you enjoyed it. Have a wonderful week!
DeleteI've heard a lot of good things about this series, but I haven't had the chance to read it
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to bump it up your reading list! Once you start, it’s almost impossible to put down. Let me know if you end up picking it up!
DeleteYour dream library sounds awesome. I hope you do get to have it one day.
ReplyDeleteI think I have already told you this before, but you you write really great book reiews.
Ah, thank you so much! That really means a lot. Fingers crossed I'm building those wooden shelves sooner rather than later.
DeleteHi Melody :)
ReplyDeleteI think you reviewed an interesting book, and I'd love to read it. I really liked the series:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picket_Fences, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Case
I also watched the series "Twim Peaks."
Melody, speaking about story number 1 – the murder of Andie Bell, high school, and the secrets of a small town.
I'll tell you, I live in a small town, and in a neighboring town (also not a carpenter's town), a young girl was brutally murdered, a high school student in
my town – the case remains unsolved to this day – I wrote the story for example here: https://moimokiem-bezfikcji.blogspot.com/2018/02/polskie-twin-peaks-w-polskim-gdzie.html
That is chilling to hear about a real unsolved case so close to home. The small-town secrets element in AGGGTM hits so hard for that exact reason. With your taste in crime shows, I think this book is going to be right up your alley!
DeleteYour blog finally reshowed up in my reading list. It hasn't for awhile. Not sure why? I haven't read any of these, but I would love a big wooden shelf library with even one of those rolling ladders. I don't care how fancy the books are because I'd rather have ones I'd actually read. But I'm also happy with the wall of books in the spare bedroom that used to be my daughter's room. Even though I could use a second wall the same size. Hope all has been well. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteGoogle might be experimenting too much. So happy you found your way back, blog algorithms can be so mysterious! Haha, a rolling ladder is on my lifetime wishlist too, but a bedroom wall bursting with books you actually read is the true goal. You definitely need to start on wall number two! Hope you are doing wonderfully. Wishing you a happy weekend.
DeleteHow exciting that you are able to read these books! I haven't read them, but have heard a lot about the series. I'll have to add it to my list!
ReplyDeleteHonestly so grateful! You’ve gotta add it—the way the clues are laid out makes it impossible to put down. You’ll devour it!
DeleteMelody, I also like reading detective stories. It can be hard to tear myself away from some stories.
ReplyDeleteSame here! That "just one more chapter" trap gets me every single time. Have you read any good ones lately?
DeleteThe TV show was great fun (I've only watched the first season so far) but I've yet to read the books.
ReplyDeleteAmalia
xo
Definitely grab the books when you can! Season 1 was awesome, but reading all the clues yourself is half the fun.

ReplyDeleteHaving a library of my own at home—that would be a dream come true. I really like the books featured today.
