My Current Reading List in Summer : A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (After Dark Edition)

Not to say you can't read these books in winter—a gritty thriller hits just as hard tucked under a heavy blanket in December!—but this is what is currently sitting right on my summer reading stack.

Just in case you didn't know, I get sent books by different publishers quite often, which means I constantly get to dive into different genres and stories. I haven't completed every single page in this stack just yet, but I wanted to walk you through each one, share my initial reactions, and give you a taste of what makes each title so impossible to put down.

Before we even get into the plots, I have to confess something: I am a total book collector at heart.

One day, I am hoping to build my very own dream library. A proper, rich wooden library filled top-to-bottom with gorgeous spines and special editions. My dad has always loved libraries, and that appreciation definitely rubbed off on me. There is just something magical about having a dedicated room where stories line the walls—and trust me, this new set is going to take pride of place on those future wooden shelves.

The Spotlight: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (After Dark Edition)

Look at this edition! The book I’m reviewing and obsessing over today is the brand-new After Dark Edition of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

If you are an aesthetic book lover like me, this one will make your jaw drop. It features a striking new cover design where the intense, fiery red pops violently against a deep, moody black background. Coupled with the gorgeous typography and those dramatic black sprayed edges, it looks like an absolute piece of art.

This is the New York Times No. 1 bestselling YA crime thriller by Holly Jackson that took TikTok by storm and went on to become a major BBC and Netflix series!

I was lucky enough to receive all four books in the series, and I want to give each one its own moment in the spotlight.

A Quick Word on the Mastermind: Holly Jackson

Before we go into the books, we have to talk about Holly Jackson for a wee bit. She has this unbelievable talent for writing high-stakes, fast-paced suspense that respects the reader's intelligence. She doesn't just write a whodunit; she gives you interview transcripts, voice notes, map sketches, and diary entries so you feel like you are standing right beside the main character, Pippa "Pip" Fitz-Amobi, solving the crime in real-time.

The Book Breakdown: Give Each One Its Moment

1. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (Book 1 – The OG Classic)

The Vibe: High school investigation, dark small-town secrets, instant addiction.

The Hook: Five years ago, popular schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh. The police closed the case. The whole town knows Sal did it. Case closed... right?

My Reaction: Pip Fitz-Amobi isn't convinced. Under the guise of a final-year school project, she decides to re-examine the case. Joining forces with Sal’s younger brother, Ravi, Pip starts pulling at threads that the town desperately tried to bury. The moment you start reading Pip's case notes, your pulse starts racing. You realize the real killer might still be walking those same streets, and they know Pip is digging. I was flipping pages so fast my thumbs hurt!

2. Kill Joy (The Prequel Novella)

The Vibe: 1920s murder mystery party, playful tension, the spark of a detective.

The Hook: Before the real murder cases, there was just a fancy-dress dinner party.

My Reaction: Pip really doesn't want to attend her friend’s 1920s-themed murder mystery game. She’d rather be studying! But once the game begins and she assumes her role, something switches on inside her. Watching Pip tease out clues to solve the fictional murder of "Reginald Remy" gives you goosebumps because you are watching the exact moment an amateur sleuth is born. It’s light, fun, atmospheric, and the absolute perfect bite-sized prequel.

3. Good Girl, Bad Blood (Book 2)

The Vibe: True-crime podcast gone viral, clock-is-ticking panic.

The Hook: Pip created a true-crime podcast about the case she solved in book one, and it went completely viral. She swore she was done playing detective for good... until a close friend’s brother goes missing.

My Reaction: This book took my anxiety levels and turned them up to ten! Jamie Reynolds vanishes on the night of a local memorial, and the police refuse to do anything because he's an adult. Pip has no choice but to break her promise to herself. Listening to the investigation unfold through her podcast updates feels so real and urgent. You feel the heavy weight of how real-life fame and dark secrets collide.

4. As Good As Dead (Book 3)

The Vibe: Psychological stalker terror, dark thriller, the ultimate showdown.

The Hook: "Who will look for you when you're the one that disappears?"

My Reaction: Chills. Absolute chills! Pip is heading off to university soon, trying to recover from the trauma of her previous cases. Then the threats start. At first, it's online comments, but soon it's chalk drawings in her driveway and dead birds on her doorstep. When Pip realizes her stalker is connected to a local serial killer, she knows the police won't save her. This book is so raw, psychological, and intense—it completely flips the script on what you expect from a YA thriller!
