Happy Democracy Day! Nigeria

Nigeria

In 1999, the military handed over authority to an elected civilian government, marking the beginning of Nigeria's longest continuous civilian rule since the country's independence from colonial rule in 1960. This day is known as Democracy Day. Beginning in the year 2000, this event has become an annual tradition.

Democracy Day is observed to honour the restoration of democracy in Nigeria, which occurred when Olusegun Obasanjo was inaugurated as president in 1999, ending decades of military dictatorship that began in 1966 and had only been broken by a brief period of democracy between 1979 and 1983.

We want you to remember that the highest office in this country is your position as a citizen. And we must work together to make the country functional for all citizens.
