Something About This Just Doesn’t Feel Right

This has been sitting on my mind for a while, and as uncomfortable as it is for me to write about it, I feel like I need to get it out. I have been going over the same thoughts again and again, trying to understand why I feel the way I do. The truth is, I haven’t come to any conclusion. I’m not accusing anyone of anything, and I’m not trying to create a problem where there isn’t one. I genuinely want to look at this with an open mind, which is why I’m bringing it here. Sometimes you can ask a question directly, but sometimes even asking the question can make it seem as though you have already made up your mind or are taking offence. So instead, I want to tell you exactly what happened and let you tell me whether I’m seeing something that isn’t there or whether you understand why I feel a little uncomfortable about the whole situation.

It started with a property I was trying to fence back home. When you are not physically present for a project, you have no choice but to trust people. You have to give people the benefit of the doubt and hope that everything is being handled properly. Unfortunately, I started noticing changes in behaviour from the person handling the fencing. Whenever I tried to communicate or ask questions, I sometimes felt that they were becoming defensive, even when I wasn’t accusing them of anything. Eventually, I became frustrated and decided to pause the project. It was almost finished, but I needed to step back and figure out what to do next.

During that period, I thought about who might be able to help me find someone. One person immediately came to mind: a childhood friend whom I love very much.

We have known each other since we were children. We met in children’s church back home, around the time my family had just moved into the first house my dad built. We were both still in primary school, and somehow that friendship stayed with us as we grew older. Even though we have different ideas about certain things in life, we have always respected each other. We talk about relationships, family, life, beauty, work and all sorts of things.

We have supported each other over the years, even from a distance. When I go back home, we make sure we see each other. She sleeps over at my house, we have gone out together, and we have stayed in touch despite living far apart. Our conversations are so healthy and happy. We talk about beautiful things, family, memories, church, life and whatever else is happening. She is genuinely someone I consider a close friend and sister.

And there is something else I realised while thinking about this situation: I have never asked her to do anything for me. Not because I don't trust her or because there is anything wrong with our friendship. I simply never had a reason to ask. If there was no need for her to do something for me, why would I ask her? It just happened that way.

Then the fencing situation came up.

I knew I needed someone back home who could supervise the work because I wasn’t there. It wasn’t a case of asking her to do the actual fencing. I needed someone who could go to the property, supervise what was happening, make sure things were progressing properly and generally keep an eye on things. Their transport would be paid, and they would also receive a salary for the period, which would probably be a month. If the job was completed before the month was up, they would still receive the full one-month's pay.

I asked my friend if she could help me find someone suitable. She said she would.

At first, I thought nothing of it. I waited. A week passed, then another. We continued talking, but there was no conversation about the person I needed. Eventually, I brought it up myself and asked if she had managed to find anyone. She told me she hadn't.

I said that was fine and told her to take her time, because she also works and life can get so stressful.

Later, she told me she had spoken to someone, but the person hadn't given her a definite answer. Again, I said that was fine. Then she mentioned another person who might be able to do it, although she wasn't sure whether that person would be willing to take on the supervising role.

She told me different people said they were interested but she would message me last minute and say they backed off. I told her to take her time and if she needed anything, she should let me know. I always expressed how grateful I was for the help.

Eventually, she told me she had spoken to four more persons. It was already getting to 3 months. I remember thinking, “Okay, which one do you think is most suitable?”

She told me about one person who seemed willing to take the job and said they had agreed to everything. I told her to send the person all the necessary information. The next step was simply to take this person to the property so they could see the location before starting.

Then the day came.

All information regarding the property meeting for the supervising job was being passed through my friend, who had confirmed she discussed the meeting location with the candidate she found. On the day of the meeting, the person I sent to show the candidate the property arrived at the location and tried calling the number my friend had provided, but it wouldn't go through. They then called my friend, who informed them that the candidate had sent a message stating they would no longer be able to take the job.

I was surprised and told my representative to wait while I called my friend. We had spoken just yesterday evening, and she had arranged everything—if the candidate wasn't coming, she should have messaged me. I checked my phone and found no messages, so I called my friend and asked if that was the information she had given. She confirmed she had, stating that the candidate had messaged her in the morning to say they could no longer make it.

I was even more frustrated because the appointment was for the afternoon; even though the candidate told her this in the morning, she never bothered to call and inform me.

I remember thinking, “Oh, okay.” But then I wondered why she hadn't told me earlier. I didn't make a big issue out of it. I asked if there was another option. She said she would keep looking.

The same sort of thing happened again. Eventually, I became frustrated and thought, “Maybe I should just sell the property.” She immediately told me not to sell it. She said she would find someone and promised that she would help me.

So I waited again. And again, things didn't work out. Someone cancelled. Someone else wasn't available. Another person couldn't commit. Each time, I only knew what I was being told, and according to the information she gave me, the people she had contacted simply weren't working out.

I eventually decided to stop pursuing it through that particular route. I thought I would find someone myself or through a supervising company. That was about three months ago.

And this is where my question really begins. Since then, my friend and I have continued talking normally. Nothing happened between us. We didn't argue. We didn't fall out. There was no disagreement, no misunderstanding and no obvious change in our friendship.

Three months have passed; it's been more than four months, and she has never once asked me:

  • “Did you find someone?”

  • “Did you sell the property?”

  • “Did you eventually continue with the fencing?”

  • “Did you manage to sort it out?” Nothing.

And I don't know why that keeps coming to mind.

This is where I need you to understand what is going through my thoughts. I am not saying my friend was obligated to find someone for me. She wasn't. It was my project, not hers. She was doing me a favour, and I appreciate that. People get busy. People forget things. People try to help and sometimes genuinely can't. People recommend someone who later changes their mind. All of that is completely possible.

So why do I still feel uncomfortable?

Every time I see her message pop up on my phone, there is this little thought in the back of my mind:

Did she really try to find someone?

Then another thought comes: Maybe she did.

Then: But how did every single person cancel?

Then: Maybe she simply didn't want to get involved.

Then I stop myself because I don't want to be unfair to her. Maybe she genuinely tried. Maybe every person really did cancel. Maybe she became busy with her own life and the whole thing simply slipped from her mind. Maybe I am reading too much into the fact that she hasn't asked about it. Or maybe there is something about the situation that I am picking up on but cannot quite put into words.

That is the part I can't explain. There was no fight. There was no betrayal that I know of. She hasn't treated me badly. Nothing obvious happened between us. If anything, she is still the same lovely person I have always known. I still check on her 3-4 times every week and she does the same.

So why does something about this particular situation feel... off?

And I don't even know what question I would ask her. If I asked, “How come everyone you found cancelled?” she has already given me the answer. If I asked, “Why haven't you asked me about the property since then?” that would be selfishness and entitlement on my end, which is wrong. She does not owe me that.

Honestly, there is no question to ask.

So perhaps that is why I'm writing this blog post. I want to know whether the feeling I have, which I cannot explain, is stupid?

Have you ever had a situation where nothing actually happened, nobody said anything wrong, there was no argument and yet something inside you just didn't sit comfortably with what happened? Did you trust that feeling, or did you eventually realise you were simply overthinking? Because I genuinely don't know which one this is.

I am not looking for people to tell me that my friend is a bad person. I don't believe she is. I'm also not looking for people to tell me to cut her off over something I cannot even properly explain.

I just want another perspective. Maybe someone reading this will notice something I haven't noticed. Maybe someone will tell me, “Melody, honestly, I think you're reading too much into this.” Or perhaps someone will say, “I understand exactly why that would make you uncomfortable.”

So tell me honestly: if you were in my position, would you think anything of this situation?

I really want to hear your thoughts, especially if you've experienced something similar. Sometimes we can be so close to a situation that we can't see it clearly anymore.

What do you think? I need your opinions, please take your time to tell me what you really think.

Thank you.

These photos were taken during an evening stroll.

  1. Hi Melody, I can finally leave you a quick comment. It seems blogger wasn't working properly! Now, I understand why this situation has been on your mind. Sometimes it's not just one thing, but a small detail—or the feeling that something's off—that bothers us. At the same time, I think you're right not to jump to conclusions, because there could be many perfectly innocent explanations. Perhaps, with time, things will clear up. Kisses ❤️

    1. You come from another angle, which could be looked at, but she honestly hasn't done anything to me in the past, and I also don't think this situation is clear enough to draw any conclusions.

  2. Your feelings are legit. I would pretty upset if a dear friend treated me that way...well, a friend in need is a friend indeed. At least now you know her better.

  3. Melody, construction work and housing issues, this is all genuinely stressful stuff. Sometimes it is hard to see clearly while in the situation. I don't know your friend, so I cannot comment on the situation, but it seems she at least tried to do something. She communicated with you, and that is something....I don't think this is a reason to fall out ...and I think it makes sense for you to stay friends. I understand why you feel uncomfortable but I also understand why you continued with the friendship. Maybe something was off, but it is hard to be certain. If it continues to bug you, you can always talk with her again. Maybe she made some mistake but is afraid of it affecting your friendship so she doesn't want to talk about the fencing situation.
People on the Internet are always on the defensive so they will probably just see the worst in this situation and comment accordingly. If someone is a lovely person on overall, does it really matter if they made a mistake or handled something poorly once?

    1. You are right, Ivana. It was so difficult and I was stressing so much at some point. Yes, she communicated with me; it's hard to be certain now because she's still the same sweet person. Yes, if someone is a good person and makes a mistake, we should always give them a chance to make it right, because we all make mistakes. I think I might be the problem here, because I keep overthinking things and letting my mind play on. Thank you for this advice.

    1. You are right; it keeps coming to my mind and I don't know what it is. The thing is, I don't know how I am feeling; I don't understand how I am feeling, and I don't even know what I am feeling. How do I communicate it? She did not take anything from me; things might have just not worked out, and things like that can happen. .

  6. Melody,
Reading your post felt like reading about myself, because I was once in a similar situation.
Unfortunately, I don't believe your friend actually followed through on her promise to help.
It’s impossible that no contractor could be found over such a long period.
She didn't want to say no—to keep things amicable—but she also wasn't honest enough to admit she hadn't actually looked. That’s not right.
She wasn't obligated to help; she could have simply said she wouldn't handle it. You would have understood. Keeping your hopes up while doing nothing is a breach of trust.
I understand your thoughts and your dilemma—after all, this is a long-standing friendship—but even those can come to an end.
    Sending you a big hug!

    1. Reading this made me so emotional. Honestly, some feelings are really hard to process; I don't even know what to believe but i choose to believe she tried to help me. I am not an entitled person, and even if I look at it this way, I also believe she doesn't owe me anything. This is my project, it's a bit hard, and I don't ever want to get to a stage where I don't trust people because I think many people have already reached that stage of life. I don't know, honestly, I don't know. I don't even know how to process my feelings. Thank you for commenting.

    2. You are a good, sensitive, honest, and caring person. You judge others by the same standards, and there is nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, not everyone is like you, and some may take advantage of your trust—especially since they know you so well.
It is good to have faith and trust, of course, but you also need to be cautious to avoid disappointment, because that hurts.
Do you know what surprised me the most and made me reflect on your friend's good intentions?
The fact that she didn't ask how your situation was going. After all, she was supposedly involved in it. It’s strange!

  9. I can understand why this has stayed at the back of your mind. I don’t think you’re being stupid or overly suspicious, but I also wouldn’t take the feeling alone as proof that your friend did something wrong. What stands out to me is not that the people she suggested kept cancelling, because that really can happen, but that she never checked back with you afterward, especially after being so involved in the situation for several months.

At the same time, you know her much better than anyone reading your post, so there may be details in your friendship that we simply can’t see. Personally, I wouldn’t accuse her of anything, but I also wouldn’t completely ignore that uncomfortable feeling. Sometimes it doesn’t mean that someone has betrayed us; sometimes it simply tells us that something about a situation doesn’t quite add up. I’d probably leave it alone for now and see whether the feeling remains over time rather than forcing an explanation.

  11. I don't know what finding help is like in your part of the world (and yes, it's even worse long distance). But here in Michigan, good luck. You call a contractor to come for a quote and they set up an appointment and don't show. Multiple times. Or they come, quote you, you call to tell them you'd like to have them do the work and they don't show up. Or they ghost you and don't even answer your calls. It has happened to us numerous times. It doesn't matter whether it is here at home or at the cottage, but it is tougher at the cottage because of the distance. It's almost easier to hire the overpriced worker who comes looking because there they are and they'll do it now. (Ask me how Rick managed to pay twice the amount for tree removal after the up-north ice storm than our neighbor did. Or the one who cut down the tree (a different time) and never took it away.)

As for your friend, I can see it working both ways. I do think she may have tried and had some of the issues I described. Maybe there was faulty follow through on either side. Maybe she didn't want to tell you or hated to quit, thinking she'd let you down. Who knows? If you were doing most of this by text or email, things can get messed up, far more than a phone or in-person (impossible here) conversation. I'd be inclined to maintain the friendship but hesitate to ask her help. I don't know how far "home" is for you -- I'm guessing not an easy visit. At some point this may come up in discussion -- but not in text. (Maybe you could ask her for a list of those she contacted, along with her notes about their interest (for example, interested but can't do it now, not at all interested, said he'd come then backed out) so you can touch base yourself -- whether you do or don't.) It might provide answers -- or at least a way to follow up.

  12. My take- it sounds like she really didn't want to be doing it and so she ignored talking you about it. She didn't want to say she wasn't interested because you are a friend and she wants you to keep being a friend. So she ignores it, hoping you took care of it and she doesn't have to deal with it.

  13. Hi Melody. It's so hard to know what really happened here. I think your friend may have genuinely tried to find someone, but who knows how hard she tried. It can be very difficult to hire a contractor, or so I've been told by friends who have tried to do construction or renovation projects. There's a lot of work and they have the pick of the jobs, so perhaps the ones your friend contacted simply got better offers. On the other hand, your friend may have simply grown weary of the situation and been too embarrassed to beg off. I say, put it behind you and preserve your friendship. This is why the "experts" always advise against mixing business and pleasure!

    ReplyDelete
  14. It sounds like your friend did not know how big this project would be - and neither did you. Apologize to your friend. You should have called a company, probably will cost more, and handled this yourself. Construction projects are always bigger than they seem. Contractors are unreliable and never get back to you timely.

  15. In my opinion, it is better not to mix work and finances with friendship. Business is business—it has to generate a profit. Not everyone is cut out for it; no matter how hard someone tries, they simply won't find fulfillment in it. If the situation directly concerned you, your friend would certainly help. Please don't take it to heart. Best regards.🤗

  16. Hi Melody,
I really don't know what to write or say to you...
I think your friend really tried to find someone, but it didn't work out. Maybe the people she found initially wanted to, but changed their minds.
I think your friend might not be happy that she "let you down" and that's why she doesn't want to talk about it... Maybe she's upset because she promised you and didn't complete the task?
Melody, but I'm thinking of something else. I don't know how it is with finding workers to build fences and similar tasks, but maybe it's difficult to find such people?
Melody, I send you my best regards and wish you a good new week!

  17. Maybe your friend did her best to find someone to do the work and when she couldn't just feels she failed you and just didn't like to mention it again. If it was me, I would put the incident behind me since your friendship doesn't seem to have changed.

  18. I am a good bit older than you and have disappointments with friendships, as well as being the disappointing one at times, I am sure. I also have a tendency to read things into situations that are not always intended. So I understand your questions.
Feel how you feel. Feelings are always valid, even if they are not absolutely correct. My advice through trials and many errors on my part is to set a time limit for feeling hurt, then decide to either let it go, or let go of the friendship. (Though I cannot honestly see letting a lifelong friendship go because of what may or may not be intentional.)

  19. Hi Melody. I have been in a similar situation many years ago. With what you have written it seems to me that your friend is being a bit deceptive. Maybe not in a bad way. Your said she works and maybe didn't have the time to do what she wanted to do. The fact that she wasn't always upfront with you is the disturbing part for me. If she couldn't do that favor she should have told you at any point in the 4 months. However, maybe she felt bad that she couldn't follow through. The fact that she has not mentioned it at all since shows me she may be embarrassed and doesn't want to face you even on the phone. With all of that said, I find that going with my gut feelings are always valid. If the friendship is one you want to keep and is as long as you say it is, truth is the way to go and you should be able to bring up the subject with her. Instead of wondering what happened and making you stress about it. Just my thoughts.

  27. It happens in some situations that seem strange and absurd. As I am, I would wait a moment and then ask; maybe the other person is also wondering why you haven't asked. If you think it's something that could ruin something in your relationship, talk and clarify, otherwise just put it aside. As for the fact that you then look for people for jobs and they first say yes and then disappear or change their story along the way, that's another story that's all too common!

  29. Well, for me it does't feel right, either. And by talking to your friend as if nothing had nappened you showed her that you didn't care. But you DO care. I would strongly advise talking to her openly. At least this is what I was told to do in therapy. Try.

  31. Dear Melody,
I took some time to think about this because you asked for an honest opinion, and I can understand why something about the situation still feels uncomfortable to you.

For me, it is not so much the fact that all the people she contacted eventually declined. There could be many perfectly innocent explanations for that, and from the outside none of us can know what really happened.

What I do understand is your feeling about what happened afterwards. Your friend had been involved in this situation for months, knew how important it was to you, and repeatedly tried to help. After all of that, I too would probably find it a little surprising if a close friend never once asked whether I had eventually found someone, finished the fence, or solved the problem.

But I would make a distinction between the feeling and the conclusion. I think your feeling is understandable, but it does not necessarily mean that your suspicion is correct. Perhaps she feels uncomfortable because none of her suggestions worked out. Perhaps she assumes you no longer want to discuss it. Or perhaps she simply put the matter out of her mind once you decided to find another solution.

If it were me, I would not allow this one unresolved question to change a friendship that has lasted since childhood, especially when everything else between you still feels warm and normal. But I also would not tell myself that I am foolish for noticing that something felt a little odd.

Sometimes we do not have enough information to solve every uneasy feeling. Perhaps this is one of those times when it is enough to notice it, leave the question open, and judge the friendship by everything else you know about this person.

    Warm greetings,
    Anette

  32. It always is a bit messy bringing friendship into work. Not everyone does the things the way we do, thinks the way we do or give importance to the things we do. And it could cause strain on the relationship. In this situation you could just continue to ignore it like she is or ask and find out what she has to say.

  35. Okay...you asked. Now you understand why you NEVER involve friends OR family in your business dealings. Also...NEVER pay a contractor all his money up front...you need to pay them when the job is DONE. Second...Your friend
(and I'm not saying she did this) knew you couldn't check up on her efforts to find someone, so why fulfill a promise? She is your friend, not your manager...Want to keep her friendship? Never ask her again to do things like this...Either go and check for yourself or hire someone to do it...and if you can't be there, and you must rely on others to manage the property, sell it and get something closer to You. Asking her? I wouldn't bother...there's no way you can tell if she's being truthful and the friendship will most certainly tank. Depends on how much you value her as your friend...follow your head on that one.
And lastly Babygirl, try not to depend too much on others or bite off more than You can chew...make good and beneficial, to You, choices. You'll free yourself of the heaviness that is resting on your heart right now... Wish I could give you a big hug right now...but alas...
Don't lose your smile over this...it absolutely will also pass!
    Big hug

The sheer number of people who suddenly backed out, combined with the lack of any subsequent interest in the matter, can certainly raise questions—even without concrete proof that something was amiss. If there isn’t a satisfactory conclusion, the doubts set in and that could ruin any connection. You have known this person almost your whole life. I would ask yourself what is more important. Keeping hold of the doubts or risk ruining this friendship. Harder said than done I know, but let it go and move on. Often what we think about a situation is also not the way it truly is. I hope you get everything fixed, both your fences, and I’m talking about your friendship too. Good luck, wishing you only the very best of outcomes.

  38. Dear melody ,i read it carefully and i genuinely don't want to say anything about it until i share with you what came into my mind while reading this .it is personal experience and about something i will never talk about on my blog except once a i gave post Necromancy versus God many years back.
it was when i have been meditated since many years and started to notice things which have never came into my notice before in my entire life . Anyway in short when we moved in our newly constructed house here i felt like the place has some negative push ,as something whispered to me that it was not safe in some way . My faith is deepest and strongest feeling ingested in my being completely . when we settled and i would try to recite from holy book or pray abundance of crow would surround me like attacking ,in short let me tell you things that happen similar to you. A man with bike cart would drop water drum to every house in the street. one day when i went to receive he suddenly and simply refused ,not with words but he was like hacked or confused ,i was saying ,please give the water drum and he said ,wait and moved ahead , after some days or weeks our cable was cut down even the bill was paid . i never ever had fight to anyone in my whole life and my neighbours children would get on their roof and drop trash in our yard . i was like what is happening ,numerous other things my firned . reason i am telling you because i got the whole story in next decade ,an old woman lived in our neighbourhood ,according to other people she had something to do with black magic ( yes i too never believed in this but had to when things were so obvious) this realisation made my life better .my relationships with family and friends got better because now i knew that someone else was playing with their mind . you don't have to believe me and forgive me if i sound silly .but i felt like sharing with you because i know that learning things like this can make a strong and wise person stronger and wiser !

  40. This sounds like such a frustrating situation. It sounds like your friend really let you down, whether intentionally or not, and until that is discussed, there will always be a bit of awkwardness in the relationship. It's so hard when things on the surface of a friendship appear to be the same, but nothing feels the same as before. You trusted her and she did not follow through on what she had promised. She also didn't follow up with interest in the property or your situation. This likely keeps coming to mind, because there are a lot of unsaid words. If her communication had been clear, consistent, and honest throughout this process, it would be easier to believe that she had the best of intentions all the way through, but because that was not the case, the doubt creeps in and you are left wondering what really happened.

  41. I do not think you are asking stupid questions at all. I do not think your friend is a bad person either. In my opinion, when somebody gives a lot, also wants to receive the same treatment from a friend and this is not always the case. There are friends that stay by you in the worst moments, and there are others that only serve for a dinner or for a walk. Friendship depends (among many other things) on knowing what to ask who, and perhaps your friend is reluctant to ask because she feels that her help was not good enough. Leave it like that and enjoy the rest.

  44. “If I had a dollar for every time I misunderstood a message, I’d be rich in confusion.” ~ Unknown. I have this quote pasted on the contact form of my website. I don't have any answers, but I've lived long enough to have experienced many, many weird fall outs and misunderstanding with friends and even strangers. Sigh.

  48. Dear Melody, I don't know your friend, nor do I know the exact background (what kind of property it is, why the fence was supposed to be installed there, etc.). You don't have to explain it to me, either; I just mean that it's hard for me to offer a real opinion without knowing all the details. But here is what I can tell you: Not everyone is well-suited for every task. Perhaps your friend tried several times to find someone but was repeatedly disappointed. Maybe that’s why she felt overwhelmed by the project but didn't want to admit it (because she had promised you this favor as a friend, because she thought that’s what a friend ought to do, or because she originally wanted to help but then realized she couldn't manage it...).
That might be why she doesn't mention the project—she wants to put the topic behind her. She might be better suited to continuing to talk to you about everything just as before, but not about that one specific thing that just "wasn't her thing"...
All the best from Austria 🤗
