Happy 4th of July weekend! The grills are fired up, the coolers are packed with ice, and the countdown to the local July 4th fireworks show is officially on.
Whether you are hosting a massive backyard party or just relaxing with family, there is one thing everyone can agree on: 4th of July food is the absolute best part of the holiday.
But while we love the classic American cookout, it also sparks some incredibly fierce debates. Every family has that one relative who defends their secret potato salad recipe with their life, or the kid who thinks sparklers are better than the main event.
Let's settle the ultimate holiday arguments once and for all. Where do you stand on these four classic 4th of July traditions?
Debate 1: Hot Dogs vs. Hamburgers
It is the ultimate grilling showdown.
The Case for the Burger: It's a canvas for creativity. Cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce, jalapeños—you can make it your own. A perfectly juicy cheeseburger is the undisputed king of the American cookout.
The Case for the Hot Dog: It’s nostalgic, effortless, and easy to eat while walking around playing backyard games. Plus, nothing screams "summer holiday" like a charred dog with classic mustard and relish.
Debate 2: Potato Salad vs. Pasta Salad
You can't have 4th of July recipes without talking about the sides. The table is crowded, but you only have room on your paper plate for one scoop. Which one gets the real estate?
Team Potato Salad: Creamy, savory, and traditionally southern. It’s the ultimate comfort food side dish.
Team Pasta Salad: Light, tangy, and packed with summer veggies, feta, and Italian dressing. It feels a little more refreshing when it's 90 degrees outside.
Debate 3: Sparklers vs. The Big Fireworks Show
When the sun goes down, the fireworks come out. But how do you prefer to celebrate?
The Sparkler Squad: You like the hands-on experience. Running around the backyard, writing your name in the air with glowing light, and taking the perfect aesthetic photo.
The Big Show Fans: You prefer the real deal, packing up the lawn chairs, finding the perfect spot in the park, and watching the massive sky-high display choreographed to music.
Debate 4: Watermelon vs. Bomb Pops
You need something cold to survive the July heat.
The Backyard Classic: Fresh, crisp, ice-cold watermelon slices. Bonus points if you're having a seed-spitting contest.
The Childhood Nostalgia: The iconic red, white, and blue Bomb Pop (or Rocket Pop) fresh out of the freezer box.

Do not make me chose between hamburgers and hot dogs. Normally I'd go for burgers, but on the Fourth of July, it definitely has to be both!
ReplyDeleteI’m curious though, do you lean more toward piling the burger high with toppings, or keeping it classic and letting the flavour speak for itself? plus with hot dogs, are you someone who goes full creative with sauces and extras, or more of a simple ketchup-and-mustard type?
DeleteI am going to a friend for lunch today. They will have grilled chicken!; I am taking 13 strawberries and 13 peanut butter cookies, in honor of the 13 original colonies. Georgia was the 13th!
ReplyDeleteGrilled chicken is always a good choice for a relaxed lunch like that, and those strawberries and peanut butter cookies sound like a sweet and personal contribution.
DeleteI’m curious, did you plan the number 13 ahead of time, or is that a tradition you like to keep for the 4th?
I like hamburgers better and like to have potato salad when having hamburgers. :)
ReplyDeleteAlways have watermelon on the 4th. :)
Hamburgers with potato salad is always a comforting combination, and watermelon on the 4th feels just right for summer. I hope you enjoyed it all.
DeleteI have a difficult time choosing between hamburgers and hotdogs, because I love them both, if they're quality meat and properly dressed. The other choices were easy - potato salad, sparklers, and water melon! Happy 4th and 250th Birthday USA, to you and your loved ones!
ReplyDeleteThat’s a proper Fourth of July spread right there, no overthinking, just everything that belongs on the table. I like how you’ve got that balance going: burgers and hot dogs both earning their place, potato salad doing its quiet essential work in the background, and then watermelon stepping in as the perfect finish. And sparklers on top of it all gives it that old-school celebration feel that never really gets old.
DeleteIch denke, man kann essen was einem schmeckt. Es kommt auf die perfekte Mischung an, dass für jeden das Richtige dabei ist. Ich denke, in erste Linie zählt das gesellige Zusammensein. LG Romy
ReplyDeleteThat was fun, we could do without the fireworks though. Fireworks are legal here and they will go on for 4-5 nights. Have a wonderful and safe Independence Day!
ReplyDeleteI get that, it can be fun in the moment but when it stretches over several nights it does start to feel a bit much. It’s one of those things where a little goes a long way.
DeleteStill, I hope you were able to enjoy the day itself and have some peaceful moments in between the noise. Wishing you a calm and safe rest of the celebrations as well.
...have them all!
ReplyDeleteThat’s the only correct answer for a day like that. No need to overthink it, just have them all and enjoy the moment while it lasts. Hope you had a good one.
DeleteBeing a vegetarian, I am not a good person to ask. But since you Did, I say hamburgers, potato salad , watermelon , go see the fireworks,
ReplyDeleteThat’s a fair and honest take, and I like how you still gave your “ideal plate” even as a vegetarian. Potato salad and watermelon always feel like the safest and most reliable parts of the spread anyway.
DeleteHamburgers as I don't like hot dogs, neither salad, I was burnt by a sparkler once but I would still choose the over a big show and I have no idea what bomb pops are so I will go with watermelon.
ReplyDeleteThat sparkler story does put me off them a bit, I can understand why you’d still choose them but keep your distance. Once you’ve had a scare like that, you never really forget it.
DeleteI like your honesty on the rest too, just straight to what you actually enjoy rather than trying to tick every box. Hamburgers and watermelon sounds like a simple, solid combination anyway. I have to ask though, what’s the closest thing you’d compare a “bomb pop” to where you are, or is it one of those treats you’ve genuinely never come across before?
Today I keep thinking a hot dog AND a hamburger sounds good! Can I have both? heehee! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThat’s the only sensible conclusion in the end, isn’t it. One just doesn’t quite cover it, so you end up right back at having both and being perfectly fine with that decision.
DeleteHonestly, a hot dog followed by a hamburger (or the other way around if you’re feeling bold) feels like the proper way to settle it. No compromise, just enjoyment in both directions. What usually tips it for you in the moment, do you start with the burger or go straight for the hot dog first?
Prefiero las hamburguesas y la ensalada de papa. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a solid combination, simple and always satisfying. A good hamburger with potato salad has that proper comfort feel to it, nothing overcomplicated, just good food that works well together. Do you usually keep your burger classic, or do you like adding different toppings depending on the day?
DeleteHamburger, Pasta Salad and Watermelon, Melody.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a really nice combination, you’ve got the hearty part with the hamburger, something cool and light with the pasta salad, and then watermelon to finish it off properly.
DeleteYo perritos calientes. Un abrazo desde la distancia. feliz verano.
ReplyDeleteHot dogs really do have that simple, comforting charm to them, nothing fancy, just something you can enjoy without thinking too much about it.
DeleteMelody, I'm not a fan of American food.
ReplyDeleteFair enough, tastes really do vary from place to place, and there’s plenty of other food traditions worth enjoying instead. Out of curiosity, what kind of meals do you usually prefer where you are?
DeleteCreo me decantaria por hamburguesa casera, cualquiera de las dos ensaladas, sandia y espectaculo de fuegos.
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
That’s a really balanced choice, homemade burger always makes a difference, there’s something about doing it yourself that just tastes better. Either salad works as a good side too, and watermelon is perfect for finishing things off in a light way.
DeleteI'm team Brat, which is probably more hot dog than hamburger but then more for burger than dogs. Except sometimes! Yesterday we had pulled pork and that was new but might be a tradition, it was so good. I opt for cole slaw over the other two salads (fewer carbs) with potato salad a close second. Deviled eggs too. Watermelon over the other but ice cream is a pretty wonderful dessert too!
ReplyDeleteThat’s a proper “I’ll take a bit of everything done well” approach, and honestly it makes sense. Pulled pork sounds like it might have stolen the show yesterday, that’s the kind of thing that quietly becomes a tradition without anyone planning it.
DeleteI like your balance too, coleslaw as the lighter option, potato salad close behind, then deviled eggs bringing that extra richness in. Watermelon and ice cream both have their place, it just depends on whether you want something refreshing or something indulgent. Do you think pulled pork has officially earned a permanent spot in your lineup now, or is it still in the “we’ll see if it repeats itself” stage?
Pasta salad. :) Watermelon. :) I don't eat meat, so maybe grilled eggplant. :)
ReplyDeleteGrilled eggplant fits in beautifully too, it has that satisfying depth when it’s done right on the grill.
DeleteJem to i to, ale bardzo rzadko, bo trzymam linię.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense, especially when you’re being mindful of your health and keeping your weight in balance. It doesn’t have to be about eating everything all the time, but more about choosing what you enjoy in small, satisfying ways.
DeleteI love both hamburgers and hot dogs, but for the 4th, hot dogs just seem to suit better. I don't care for potato or pasta salad. Sign me up for the big fireworks show - I can't get enough of it!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from ST&F today - enjoyed the fun debate!
That’s a very 4th of July kind of choice, hot dogs just do seem to belong to that day in a special way. I get you on the fireworks, when it’s a big proper show it really pulls everything together. Skipping the salads too keeps it simple, just straight to what you actually enjoy. Sounds like your kind of celebration is more about the atmosphere than the food spread anyway. Do you usually go out to watch the fireworks in a crowd, or do you prefer finding a quieter spot where you can still see them but avoid the rush afterwards?
DeleteGenerally, the barbecue is meat-based and as a vegetarian I always find few options unless I know the hosts well, whereas if friends organize it I'm sure to find lots of side dishes and then grilled vegetables, and veggie burgers are great too!!!
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean. Barbecues often tend to centre around meat, which can leave vegetarians with limited choices if the hosts have not considered different dietary needs or are not able to provide them due to funds or other reasons.
DeleteI don't eat meat, so the best festive meals for the children and grandchildren are fish and chips. Easily cooked, easily carried outside to sit in the sun, tastes delicious, no cutlery needed and sweets can be limited to peaches, grapes, strawberries and mandarins. Love it!
ReplyDeleteFish and chips are such a comforting choice. Sometimes the simplest gatherings create the best memories.
DeleteHamburgers, pasta salad, & fireworks show for sure.
ReplyDeleteHamburgers, pasta salad, and fireworks are such a classic combination, bringing together great food and a bit of excitement.
DeleteHamburgers, potato salad, sparklers, watermelon. I'm 54 a still leary of big fireworks shows. Lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month dear friend. I'm so happy you're here.
Hamburgers, potato salad, watermelon, and sparklers have a way of bringing back those simple, joyful moments. I completely understand being cautious with big fireworks shows too, sometimes the smaller celebrations feel just as special. Thank you for sharing your traditions and for having me join Sweet Tea & Friends. I always enjoy being part of this wonderful community.
