The Fresh Air Fellowship: The First Movement Link-Up

Picnic in Loch Lomond, Scotland

You are welcome to the first movement link-up. I am glad that we are all participating in this; please remember to add the code to your blog.

This week’s movement took me somewhere that always feels grounding, Loch Lomond.

The morning started quietly. The night before, I had worn my strawberry-patterned pajamas from Temu. The pajamas were soft, comfortable, and surprisingly warm when layered.

When we set out, it was cold, the usual kind of February cold. The air felt sharp, and you could see your breath in front of you. I had my thick jacket on, zipped up fully, grateful for every layer. February at Loch Lomond is beautiful, but it does not pretend to be warm. The landscape looks still and strong, the water stretching wide under a pale sky, the surrounding hills quiet and watchful.

The walk itself was long. Not rushed. Not dramatic. Just steady.

There’s something deeply satisfying about taking different pathways before finally reaching the loch. Each turn feels like progress earned. Gravel beneath my shoes, the rhythm of my steps finding their pace, the slight sting of cold air on my cheeks, it all felt like I was working toward something meaningful. And when the water finally came into full view, it felt like a reward.

Loch Lomond in February has a certain dignity. The trees are bare, the colors muted, the air crisp. It isn’t the lively summer version. It is calm, restrained, and almost reflective. Standing there, wrapped in my thick jacket, I felt both small and steady at the same time.

Physically, the long walk did what movement always does when we allow it to: it warmed me from the inside out. My circulation improved, my muscles loosened, and by the time I headed back, I could feel that pleasant fatigue in my legs, the kind that reminds you your body is capable.

Mentally, it was even more powerful.

Walking in cold, open air clears the mind in a way that indoor spaces cannot. The noise quiets. Thoughts organize themselves. Stress softens. Being near water especially has a calming effect; the vastness of it shifts perspective.

The entire experience felt like a gift to myself. Rest well. Dress warmly. Walk steadily. Take the long route. Earn the view.

That was my movement this week.

Now I would love to hear about yours.

Share your weekly movement below using the link-up. Whether you walked in nature, stretched at home, moved at work, or simply took more steps than usual — it all counts.

Let’s continue moving together, one day at a time. Remember, you can also add both link and photo below.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

  4. I go walking everything morning when I first get up. I walk all around my town and go between 10,000 - 12,000 steps. I went every day this week. I also have a light weight routine that I do three times a week. Mon, Tues, and Wed. I would link up but I blog about my walk every day so have nothing special to say once a week. :)

  5. This week I made it to the gym 3 times and did a bit of walking around a college campus with my son. It's tough to get a lot of movement in with so much snow everywhere. I am always more motivated to walk and move outdoors than I am indoors.

    1. Oh, that is so lovely! Three times is such a healthy number of times to visit the gym in a week. Walking is also an excellent way to get moving, and the snow can be a challenge, but I'm glad you did it. You are doing well.

I try to do as much walking around the house that I can which includes sweeping out the front of the house to clean up bird seed and leaves, this I do twice a day which is a bit of a workout form me know days.

  17. My only exercise is walking. I do an hour walk in nature every morning, and sometimes another shorter walk at night, I have never done a post specifically about my movement. I'll have to give it a thought so I have something to share. Usually, I post recipes or health ideas.

    1. If you decide to share your movement, it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, just the simple act of walking, noticing your surroundings, or the rhythm of your steps can be inspiring to others.

  20. Hi Melody!
Unfortunately, I didn't have a very active week because the weather was terrible. I'm longing for real spring – sunshine, high temperatures, and colors!
On the other hand, my mom had a checkup for cancer this past week, and I was nervous. I didn't feel like doing anything. Another thing is too, that my dad and I watched the Olympics (I love figure skating the most out of all the winter sports!!!)
Malody, I wish you a pleasant evening and a wonderful Sunday!

    1. Hi Anna, I completely understand. Some weeks are just like that, when life, weather, and worries take over, movement naturally takes a back seat. I hope your mom’s checkup brought good news and some relief. Figure skating is such a beautiful sport; watching it can feel almost like a graceful escape. Wishing you a calm, sunny week ahead, full of small moments that lift your spirit.

  24. Dear Melody, my current post isn't from last week, as it's about my British Columbia travelogue, but we were definitely active there. I don't know if that counts? If so, I'd be happy to link to it—otherwise, I'll just tell you: Edi and I are now active almost every day. We go to a gym regularly (two to three times a week). We also go hiking, walking, or jogging from time to time. Our grandchild stayed with us for two days, and we went sledding and swimming with him. Of course, all of this only works so well because we're retired and have the time to fit in so much exercise every day. When we were still working, the most intense exercise we got during the week was often just walking to and from the train station (about 30 minutes in total, depending on our pace).
All the best from Austria, Traude

Sledding and swimming are excellent ways to move and connect. Retirement really does give the freedom to embrace activity fully, and your consistency is inspiring. Thank you for sharing your experience from Austria!

  25. My own choice is walking everyday with our dog, Aris all arround here. In the park and in the streets. We are walking three times a day. First in the morning, next the big walk in the afternoon and a short one late at night. This is our daily walking mode, dear Melody.

    1. Walking three times a day with Aris must be such a joy, for both of you. There’s something special about seeing the same streets and parks at different times of day, noticing little details you might otherwise miss. Your routine shows real dedication, and it’s a beautiful way to stay active and connected with your furry companion.

  27. I went walking today....In fact, I try to do some hiking and walking every day. We had a lot of rain this month, so I did not hike as much as I normally do. I exercised at home to make up for it.

I enjoyed every single step with your very beautiful description of surroundings 🥰
I am doing exercises and walks for more than twenty years.though with age I have to shift from strong physical exercise to milder one but walks are regular part of my life , i do all my household by myself which keeps me engaged and helps me feel uplifted by sense of accomplishment.
    Best wishes to you 🥰🙏

  31. You know what I love about your posts? You do these wonderful photo shoots (which show both you and the environment off to the very best!) but rather than let it sit there and be a pretty photo post, you bring the story, the action, the feeling and moods into your narrative. When you wrote: "Loch Lomond in February has a certain dignity." I thought, "Yes! I understand that!" and it gives me such a clear picture that transcends image. I've been able to move very little this week. A walk through our big-box/all purpose grocery-and-everything store nearly did me in. Hopefully this will pass.
