Epic Trips for the Adventurous Traveller

Way to Everest stock photo

Not everyone’s ideal trip involves lounging by the pool or sightseeing from a tour bus. For those who crave something a little more exciting, whether it’s exploring remote wilderness or chasing the next adrenaline rush, travel can become one big, unforgettable adventure.

Here are five incredible experiences for the adventurous traveller, from icy frontiers to sky-high slopes.

Trek to Everest Base Camp, Nepal

Few places inspire the imagination quite like the Himalayas. And while summiting Everest is for an elite few, trekking to Base Camp is still a serious achievement and an unforgettable journey through some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes on Earth.

The route takes you through Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries and valleys carved by ancient glaciers, with snow-capped peaks as your constant backdrop. You’ll need a decent level of fitness and a bit of altitude preparation, but the reward is more than worth it.

The camaraderie that forms with fellow trekkers, the satisfaction of every step, and the moment you glimpse Everest up close all make this a truly epic travel goal.

The best time to go to Everest is between March and May or October and November, when conditions are clearest.

Embark on an Expedition Cruise Around Antarctica

If the idea of setting foot on the last great wilderness on Earth gets your heart racing, then an expedition to Antarctica is one for the bucket list. This is no typical cruise; Antarctica cruises are all about adventure, discovery, and awe-inspiring landscapes.

You’ll sail past towering icebergs, spot penguin colonies and whales, and even set foot on the continent itself. Many itineraries offer kayaking, snowshoeing, or even polar plunges for the brave. Onboard, you can expect expert guides, daily briefings, and comfortable, luxurious accommodation. Because of its remoteness and short travel window, this kind of trip takes planning, but it’s also one of the most unique and humbling experiences on the planet.

Consider visiting from November to March, during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer.

Try Canada Heli Skiing for Powder and Peaks

For seasoned skiers and snowboarders, regular slopes don’t always cut it. That’s where Canada Heli Skiing comes in: a true once-in-a-lifetime adventure that gives you access to untouched powder deep in the backcountry.

British Columbia is the global hotspot for heli-skiing, where you’ll be dropped onto remote peaks via helicopter, surrounded by endless terrain and snow that barely anyone else has touched. It’s physically demanding and weather-dependent, but for thrill-seekers, it’s hard to beat.

Most trips include expert guides, avalanche safety gear, and luxury lodge accommodation for when you’re ready to refuel and relax by the fire. For the best powder conditions, book your trip between January and March.

Explore Iceland’s Remote Highlands by Super Jeep

While many visitors to Iceland stick to the Golden Circle, the country’s remote Highlands offer something much more rugged and off-the-grid. Hiring a Super Jeep and heading into the interior gives you access to surreal landscapes: black deserts, glacial rivers, volcanic craters and geothermal hot springs.

Guided multi-day tours often include stops at places like Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk and Askja. You’ll navigate lava fields, cross icy rivers, and hike through steaming valleys, all while learning about Iceland’s unique geology and folklore.

It’s a great option for travellers who want to see the country’s wilder side, especially if you’ve already ticked off the main sights. July to September offers the best conditions when the Highland roads are open.

Dive with Great White Sharks in South Africa

If you’re looking for a rush that stays with you long after your trip, cage diving with great white sharks off the coast of South Africa might do the trick. Based primarily in Gansbaai, just a few hours from Cape Town, this experience puts you face-to-face with one of the ocean’s most powerful predators.

No diving experience is needed; you’re submerged in a secure cage just below the surface while trained guides bait and lure the sharks close (very close). For many, it’s equal parts terrifying and exhilarating and a rare chance to witness these animals in their natural habitat.

It's also worth combining with other adventures in South Africa, from safari game drives to hiking Table Mountain. April to September is ideal for the best shark sightings.

Which Adventure Is Calling Your Name?

For the adventurous traveller, the world is full of challenges to take on and wild places to discover. Whether you’re carving fresh tracks on a Canada Heli Skiing trip or stepping onto the ice during Antarctica cruises, these experiences offer more than just great photos; they become part of your story. And while each of these trips requires a little more planning and commitment, the reward is an adventure that you’ll truly never forget!

  1. Hola Melody. Me gusta viajar, pero me temo que no soy tan atrevida para emprender esas aventuras, soy más de patearme lugares andando sin sobresaltos, que es lo que me producirían esos lugares tan arriesgados. Pero sería estupendos al menos verlos.

    1. I totally get that. These adventures are definitely not for everyone, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with preferring a more relaxed "walk-about" style of travel. Just seeing photos and learning about these incredible places can be an adventure in itself, right?

Tenho um filho aventureiro, eu não sou, nada de radicais comigo tem vez. Tenho medo.
    tenha um novo mês abençoado!

    1. I totally understand. It's great your son has that adventurous spirit, but it's perfectly fine to know your own boundaries. There's plenty of beauty and excitement in travel without anything radical or scary.

  4. I'm reading all these travel posts as 1, but I liked this post. I'd either do the jeep back country of Iceland or cruise to Antartica. But if you're a hiker or skier there some fun options. Off to read more about traveling with your other posts. :)

    1. Not everyone needs to be jumping out of planes or backpacking through the jungle to have a good time. Just make sure you have a good time; that's what matters.

  11. I'd love to do any of them, but it's going to be impossible for many reasons, but the main one is health.
    Best regards.

    1. Aw, I totally hear you.

It’s honestly so tough when your heart says yes but your body just can’t keep up. That disconnect can feel frustrating, even unfair — especially when there’s so much you’d love to experience but your health puts those dreams just out of reach.

But please know: your experiences, your pace, and your story are still valid and meaningful. Adventure doesn’t have to mean scaling mountains or flying across oceans. Sometimes, it’s in the little things a new book that transports you, a cozy afternoon trying a new recipe, or even a beautiful conversation that opens up a whole world.

And don’t ever feel like you’re "missing out" because you’re still living fully, just in your own way.

Wishing you peace, comfort, and beautiful moments wherever you are.

      Warmest regards.
