But thankfully, this week is different and better. I got a brand new duvet and pillows, and honestly, sometimes it's those little changes that just spark a massive amount of joy and relaxation. I know part of it is just my love for all things new (and okay, yes, these were sent to me), but genuinely, the material they've used in this duvet and the pillows is just so incredibly mild and soft on the skin. And the two pillows? Oh my goodness, they feel like pure heaven when I sink my head into them.
I seriously appreciate when brands actually put in the work when it comes to bedtime accessories. I've got one pillow I just hug, and the other one perfectly cradles my head, all snuggled under the duvet. I don't even know how to properly explain it, but it's just... fluffy, soft, mild, trendy, and friendly! Yep, that's the best way I can describe it. And honestly, I've been sleeping way better since the very first night I started using my new Slumberdown duvet and pillows. It's been bliss.
There are different duvets on the website, but if you specifically want to try out mine, it is called a "wonderful wool duvet." I have the queen size, which should be the superking size.

We all have those nights where sleep just doesn't happen, right? But sleep deprivation? That's a whole different ballgame. Seriously, not getting enough shut-eye can really mess with your health and well-being, from making you gain weight to even increasing your risk of a heart attack.
Basically, sleep deprivation comes in two flavors: complete or partial, depending on how much sleep you're actually missing. And honestly, both types can hit you with similar mental and physical effects.
Complete sleep deprivation: This is when you just don't sleep at all – like pulling an all-nighter. You know, usually, we're up for about 16 or 17 hours before hitting the hay. But once you push past that, you go from feeling a bit tired to absolutely wiped out. Even simple stuff starts feeling impossible.
It's pretty wild, but studies on things like hand-eye coordination show that this kind of sleep deprivation can be as bad as being drunk. Imagine, 24 hours awake can make you as impaired as having a blood alcohol content of 0.10%! Yikes.
Being sleep-deprived also makes you way more likely to nod off behind the wheel or just totally lose focus. These are seriously dangerous things that cause thousands of accidents every single year.
If someone goes for two or three days without any sleep, they really struggle with tasks needing high attention and often end up with crazy mood swings, feeling depressed, and being super tense.
Your performance also dips thanks to your circadian rhythms. So, you might still feel okay in the morning or evening, but when those deep sleepiness peaks hit (like mid-afternoon or overnight), you literally can't stay awake. You might even doze off standing, sitting, or even talking or working!

Partial sleep deprivation: This happens when you get some sleep, but it's not 100% of what you need. Doctors call this building up a sleep debt.
After just one short night of sleep, most of us can usually function pretty normally. You might not feel amazing, but you can usually get through the day without anyone noticing. But after two or more nights of short sleep, you'll start seeing signs: irritability, constant sleepiness, and your work performance really starts to suffer, especially on tough tasks. Plus, you're more likely to feel run-down with headaches, tummy issues, sore joints, memory lapses, and just being slow to react. And yeah, that risk of falling asleep on the job or while driving shoots way up.
Long-term partial sleep deprivation is when you consistently get less than optimal sleep for months or even years. This is super common for people with insomnia or other sleep disorders. But even if you don't have those, it's easy to fall into this trap with all the 24/7 online distractions, communication, and entertainment opportunities out there.
Bottom line: Both complete and partial sleep deprivation are bad news for your health, performance, and safety – sometimes as risky as being intoxicated. Good news is, you can often bounce back once you catch up on sleep. But if those sleep problems keep sticking around, it's really important to chat with your doctor to figure out what's going on and get some healthy sleep habits in place.

I wish everyone a wonderful new month. Welcome to the month of August 2025.

Oh my goodness, happy belated birthday. I'm so sorry that emotional stress kept you from a peaceful sleep on such a special night. It's truly amazing how much our minds can impact our bodies, isn't it? Especially when we're feeling vulnerable.
DeleteYou're absolutely right, a good night's sleep is a superpower.
A good sleep is rare for me! Happy August Melody :-D
ReplyDeleteHappy August to you too. I hear you, a good night's sleep can feel like finding a unicorn sometimes. What usually gets in the way of you catching those Z's?
DeleteGlad you are sleeping better. I must admit I have never had problems sleeping, because I go to bed so tired from work that I fall asleep the moment my head hits the pillow LOL I did, last year, buy a cover mattress to go over the old one and it did help me sleep continuously without waking up in the night and I also no longer have back problems thanks to the new comfy over mattress.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful. A good mattress topper can really make all the difference, can't it? It's amazing how much a comfortable sleep surface contributes to overall well-being, especially when it helps with back pain too.
Delete...few things beat a good night's sleep!
ReplyDeleteYou're so right. It truly is one of life's greatest simple pleasures and necessities.
DeleteI had some sleep problems this week... it's very hot even at night and you cannot relax.
ReplyDeleteAs for Eleanor of Aquitaine, indeed what would she do? I think she would face the problem openly...
We all need to do that...it may not be easy but we have to...
Best regards
Marta
Ugh, I totally get it. Trying to sleep in this heat is a nightmare; it's so hard to just relax.
DeleteI used to have sleep problems, fortunately, it's behind me.
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic news. It's such a relief when sleep issues are in the rearview mirror.
DeleteSleep deprivation can be very debilitating. I've had some problems in the run-up to the menopause but thankfully that's all over and done with. Having the right duvet and pillows can be a game-changer. xxx
ReplyDeleteIt really can be debilitating, can't it? I'm so glad to hear those sleep problems are behind you now, especially after dealing with them during such a significant time like the menopause. The right duvet and pillows truly are game-changers. It's amazing how much difference a little bit of comfort can make in getting quality sleep.
DeleteMelody, your post is interesting. I read it with great interest.
ReplyDeleteTalking about sleep, my grandmother always told me that the best, most important sleep is before midnight. Unfortunately, I don't do that (okay, I go to bed before midnight, but very, very rarely...), I'm a "night owl." I go to bed around 1:30 a.m. (or later).
P.S.
Melody, speaking of pillows, I also received a pillow as a gift last week :)
Melody, best wishes to you and I wish you a happy weekend!!!
That's a lovely sentiment from your grandmother. There's definitely something to be said for those early hours of sleep. As a fellow night owl, I completely understand the struggle of trying to hit the hay before midnight. What usually keeps you up so late?
Thank you. That's incredibly sweet of you to say. And you're spot on about chamomile.
Gostei deste teu post, estimada amiga.

Hello, Mario. Good sleep truly is the cornerstone of both our physical and emotional well-being. It's amazing how much of an impact it has on everything.
ReplyDeleteOh, I completely understand that. It's so frustrating to wake up when you just want to stay asleep.
DeleteSuch an important topic! You explained the effects of sleep deprivation so clearly — a real reminder to take better care of our rest.

It's easy to overlook how crucial rest is until we really feel the effects, isn't it?
DeleteSleep issues is something I know all too well, and yeah a good pillow makes a big difference
ReplyDeleteA good pillow can be a total game-changer for sleep quality.
DeleteDear Melody, It is important to have healthy sleep. Insomnia and lack of sleep can lead to dementia.
ReplyDeleteIt's true, healthy sleep isn't just about feeling rested; it's vital for our long-term brain health.
DeleteInteresting information. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome.
DeleteMelody uwielbiam Twoje zdjęcia! 😊
ReplyDeleteRacja, sen jest bardzo ważny. Układ hormonalny zaczyna szaleć gdy nie śpimy wystarczająco długo. Bardzo cenne uwagi!
Pozdrawiam serdecznie.
You've absolutely nailed it. It's incredible how deeply sleep is tied to our hormonal balance. When we're sleep-deprived, it's like our body's internal orchestra goes completely out of tune, affecting everything from our metabolism and appetite to stress levels and mood. It really drives home just how fundamental sleep is to our overall health.
DeleteThere is a lot of joy in these photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteOi Melody
Além do bom e necessário texto suas fotografias me travam o olhar e fico nelas ...
It's great to hear your sleep debt is easing up a bit. There's nothing quite like winter for cozying up with a good duvet. A scented duvet sounds like an absolutely lovely idea.
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
That's a pretty consistent schedule you have there. 11 PM to 6 AM gives you a solid 7 hours, which is great for most people.
DeleteFor the most part, I sleep pretty well but my sleeping patterns have changed with age. I now can do about 6-7 hours (versus the old 8-9 I used to need). But when the lung infections kick in, sleep is challenging and boy, it affects everything I do.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, thank you for sharing so openly. It's true—sleep touches every part of life, and health challenges only make it harder. I hope the peaceful nights return quickly for you when the lungs settle down. Take gentle care.
DeleteSleep - a deficit of modern man. Very long days, too short nights. A mental fatigue that constantly accumulates. That's why there is a red area in the brain, which never recovers 100%, no matter how much someone sleeps.
ReplyDeleteCatalin, you've captured it so well—modern life stretches us thin, and rest often feels just out of reach. That lingering fatigue is real. May we all find a little more stillness in our days.
ReplyDeleteI hear you—insomnia can be such a quiet struggle, yet it touches everything. It helps to know others truly understand. Here's hoping restful nights come more easily in time.
DeleteIt's really important to get enough sleep, good duvets, sheets and pillows certainly help. I think as we get older though, it naturally becomes harder to always get a good night's sleep.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, your blog isn't letting me comment using my blog profile! I left a comment on your review of Juice which will also have come in as being from Anonymous. (I have similar issues with a number of blogs, it's not just yours)

Thank you so much for persevering with the comments despite the tech issues. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts; I am looking into this issue.
DeleteSometimes I have troubles with insomnia.
ReplyDeleteBest regards :)
Thanks for sharing that — insomnia can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you're doing all the “right” things and still can't get proper rest.
I can tell that that period was a stressful one. I have also had a period when I had to sleep less and work more not my best experience. OMG okay but like… I totally feel this in my soul. Natalia, that sounds TERRIFYING but also soooo real?? Like, I cannot even imagine waking up in the depot like, what??? That’s some movie scene energy 😳. Your brain was like, "Nope. We’re done here," and just checked out in the middle of life. Honestly, that’s what happens when we push ourselves too hard and pretend we're robots or something.
DeleteSleep is not a luxury, it’s a non-negotiable. Period. The way you described that whole “losing sense of place in your OWN city” thing?? Ugh, that hit. That’s not just being tired, that’s full-on body rebellion. I’d be crying in a café trying to remember what street I live on 😩.
Also YES to everything about good sleep setup. Like give me a warm, dark room, soft sheets, and some peace and quiet PLEASE. And the empty stomach thing? Facts.
Omg the way you mentioned young parents?? So sweet. It’s like, they didn’t choose this no-sleep life, the no-sleep life chose them. Big hugs to all the tired moms and dads out there 🫶.
Honestly, thank you for sharing this. Like genuinely. It's a reminder that rest is resistance and we should NEVER feel guilty for needing it. Sleep is self-love. Sleep is survival. And sleep is sacred. Period.
Wishing you nothing but cozy naps, dreamy nights, and strong coffee only when YOU want it. Much love.
