Why Stephen Leather’s 'Underdogs' Will Leave You Breathless

Book cover of Underdogs by Stephen Leather featuring a man and dog running from a helicopter

The rain in London doesn't just fall; it clings to you, wrapping around your bones like a shroud of ice. For Andy Bird, the streets aren't just a backdrop—they are home, a harsh, unforgiving sanctuary where every shadow hides a threat and every pavement crack tells a story of survival. But a few years ago, Andy wasn't wondering where his next meal was coming from. He was an elite soldier, a fearless SAS hero known by his comrades as "Deadman," a man who walked into the jaws of hell and walked out victorious.

That was before the mission. Before the catastrophic insurgent ambush that turned his world to ash. The blast robbed him of his hearing, shattered his marriage, stripped away his career, and spat him out onto the concrete jungle with nothing left to his name. Nothing, except for Tyson.

Tyson isn't just a dog. He’s a battle-tested Belgian Malinois, an ex-service animal carrying his own invisible scars of war, a sleek, muscle-bound shadow with jaws that could snap bone. Together, they are an unlikely pair surviving on the margins of society. Andy has learned to read the city through vibrations, through the subtle shifts in the air, and through the fierce, unwavering gaze of his canine companion who watches his six with absolute devotion. On the streets, you learn to keep your head down, blend into the background, and stay invisible.

Until the night invisibility becomes a death sentence.

It happens in Camden Town, deep in the labyrinth of grim back alleys where the city’s garbage piles up behind towering commercial skips. The air is thick with the stench of rotting food and stale diesel. Andy and Tyson are hunkered down, trying to catch a few hours of uneasy sleep out of the biting wind, when the heavy silence is fractured. It’s not the sound—Andy wouldn't hear a standard footstep anyway—it’s the sudden, violent vibration rolling through the pavement, and the sharp, sudden bristle of Tyson’s hackles.

Andy’s eyes snap open. Every instinct honed by years in the regiment roars back to life in a fraction of a second. He pulls himself back into the deepest shadow behind a massive green skip, holding his breath and letting his hand rest lightly on Tyson’s warm, tense shoulder.

A few yards away, under the sickly yellow glow of a flickering security light, a drama of pure execution is unfolding. Two men are standing over a third figure. One of them holds a silenced pistol, the muzzle smoking gently in the damp night air. The victim crumples like a broken puppet, sliding down a damp brick wall into a pool of dark, spreading crimson.

The killers don't panic. They move with clinical, professional precision, whispering in low, harsh tones, wiping down the weapon, preparing to vanish. But then, Tyson shifts slightly, a microscopic slip of a paw on loose gravel.

In a world of elite predators, silence is everything. One of the killers whips his head around, his eyes piercing the gloom. He spots the huddled figure of a homeless man and a fierce, muscular dog staring right back at him.

The momentary hesitation in the killer’s eyes tells Andy everything he needs to know. They weren't supposed to have witnesses. And in their line of work, loose ends are tied up permanently.

Before the killer can even raise his weapon, Tyson moves. The dog launches himself from the shadows like a furry missile, a localized storm of fury and teeth, slamming straight into the lead gunman’s chest with bone-crushing force. The pistol clatters onto the wet asphalt. The second gunman curses wildly, scrambling for his weapon as Andy explodes into action, his body remembering the training, the muscle memory kicking in despite the years of neglect and physical toll.

They manage to break away into the maze of back streets, heart pounding against their ribs, adrenaline flooding their veins. But as they plunge deeper into the dark heart of London, trying to lose themselves in the city's sprawling veins, Andy realizes a terrifying truth. These aren't ordinary street thugs. These are professional, shadow-ops hitters. And within minutes, he figures out something even worse: they can track him.

Every turn he takes, every hiding spot he chooses, feels entirely too convenient for men who seem to know his every move. The hunter has already become the hunted, and the net is tightening faster than a tourniquet. He ducks under an overpass, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his mind racing to calculate his next move. Out of nowhere, his phone buzzes with a garbled message that makes his blood run cold—they aren't just hunting him; they know about his past, they know who he used to be, and they are already closing in on the people he loves.

As footsteps echo ominously from both ends of the dark corridor, cutting off their escape, Andy realizes he is completely cornered, outgunned, and running out of time. Tyson bares his teeth, ready to make a final, desperate stand as a pair of laser sights paint the damp brick wall right beside them...

  11. This sounds like a very good edge of your seat kind of action thriller. A story, I'd very much be interested seeing as a movie. I really should exercise my brain with books but it won't have it as I get too distracted. Yeah, I'm weird but lovable. :) I did enjoy reading your teaser. Who knows maybe one day, my brain will quiet a bit and I can once again read novels again. Thanks for sharing an excellent review, Melody!
