My Experience at Loch Ardinning Wildlife Reserve
Oh, hi everyone!
So, you know those days when you just feel… heavy? Like your soul needs a serious spa day? That was me. I’d been going through a lot and I was carrying it all around. I remembered a comment someone once made that nature is the balm of the soul, and that phrase just stuck with me.
I still can’t quite put into words how nature has impacted my life, but I knew I needed to immerse myself in it. I needed to run to the nearest tree and hug it, basically. So, I made a plan: locate a reserve about an hour away, spend time on the bus for some thinking space, and then soak up the evening light in the wild.
I had an original destination in mind, but the ticket situation was weird one-way only—and honestly, the price wasn't right. So, I pivoted! Honestly, sometimes changing your mind at the last minute can lead to the best adventures.
This day was already a beautiful testament to the power of human connection. I was reminded that people make the world go round. When you’re down, seeing someone simply smile at you, or watching a dog owner show their furry friend so much love, it just reminds you that you are loved, too. It helps you push away those nagging worries.
My chosen destination? The Loch Ardinning Wildlife Reserve. I hopped on the bus and, thank goodness, the driver was super helpful. He gave me a pamphlet promoting tourism in Scotland—a nice touch. I had my food with me, which is my ultimate eating experience ritual: munching by the riverside when the sun is shining. It makes the food taste incredible, you know?
Here's where the drama started, though. The signs were clear, but the map? Not so much! I totally missed my stop—maybe by two or three stops. Thank goodness I had the intuition to ask the driver. He was exceptionally considerate, particularly given that I had purchased a day ticket based on his earlier recommendation (professional tip!). He asked me to cross the road and catch the next bus heading back two stops.
The second driver was just as lovely, confirming the destination and dropping me off right where I needed to be.
But the trek! The bus stop was far from the entrance. I had my heavy school bag—my mini-emergency kit with water, my book, my phone, and food—and I followed the map for what felt like forever. I must have walked for more than 10 minutes. The roads were local and lacked clear pedestrian pathways, so I walked close to the bushy area, remaining extra vigilant for oncoming cars around the curves. It was exercise, but I was so happy doing it because I knew where I was headed: nature's embrace.
The first thing I did was take a picture of the signpost (proof I made it!). I kept walking until I reached the gorgeous river—part of the waterways here, which include the famous Loch Ardinning. It was a sunny day, the best feeling ever!
I found a seat right in front of the water, surveyed my surroundings to make sure I was safe, and finally started eating my breakfast-turned-lunch. The tranquility? Unmatchable. That sound of the water, the calmness... it's just pure, genius satisfaction.
I saw a few people walk by—a family, an elderly couple, and a man and his son with a dog. But then, I found a spot alone, and that’s when I let my guard down.
I started praying. I was feeling so heavy, and I told the Holy Spirit exactly what I needed: "I need you to send me a comforter. I don't feel good. Comfort me." I was literally talking to God in the open air because of the pain in my heart.
After some time, I sat down and was just staring at the views. And guys, what happened next… God is real, guys!
A woman just walked up to me. I didn't even see her coming! She smiled and started chatting—asking about my camera equipment, I mean the tripod and how long I’d been in Scotland. She mistakenly thought my tripod was a golf club and wondered if a golf course had opened nearby, which made us both laugh it off. After a minute, she asked, do you like this place?" I replied "yes" and explained that I wasn’t happy, which was the reason I decided to take a trip to this place.
She immediately asked me to walk with her. S She had the most respectful dog ever, and she was taking it for a dip in the loch. As we walked, she told me, "Talk to me." I just broke down in tears.
She brought me so much peace and comfort. She shared her experiences, told me I was young and beautiful, and said that I shouldn't let these worries define my life. It was like walking with a friend I’d known forever! I felt so calm. She shared practical life experiences and that stuck with me.
The final blessing? She drove me right to my house. I told her I had a bus ticket, but she insisted on driving me home. It was the Holy Spirit coming to me in human form, a direct answer to my prayer less than two minutes after I asked. Sometimes God shows up exactly how you ask him to, and you just have to remind him of his word. That woman changed my whole orientation. I came home, slept soundly, and felt better than I had in weeks. May God bless her and her beautiful family.
Your Comprehensive Guide to Loch Ardinning Wildlife Reserve
Now, as you know, I can’t describe the journey without sharing all the juicy details about the destination. So here is everything you need to know about the incredible sanctuary I visited: the Loch Ardinning Wildlife Reserve.
History and Management
- Location: The reserve is found in Scotland, lying south of Strathblane and just north of Milngavie, close to Glasgow. It covers approximately 142 hectares (or 148 hectares, depending on the source).
- Trustee: The site is owned and managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT), who were gifted the loch and surrounding Muirhouse Muir by Dr. Robert Ker in 1988.
- Ancient Past: The area has a dramatic history, as the rock formation here was once called 'Cat Craig,' which relates to the Battle of Ardunnion around 570 AD.
- The Loch: Loch Ardinning itself is partly natural (formed by a glacial hollow) and partly man-made. The narrow, northern arm of the loch was created by building a dam across the outflow stream, first constructed in 1796 and later raised and widened in 1840. This historical management helped create the diverse wetland habitat we see today.
What You Can Do & What You Will See
Loch Ardinning features a diverse mosaic of moorland, wetland, woodland, and grassland, providing a tranquil escape and numerous activities for nature lovers.
Explore the Habitats & Trails
- Wetland Wonders: Along the south-west shore, you'll find wet woodland known as 'carr,' thriving with mature willow, birch, and alder. The northern shores are fringed with reeds, rushes, and sedges. This environment is crucial for many plants that have become rare elsewhere in Scotland due to wetland drainage.
- Moorland Views: The reserve includes Muirhouse Muir, which offers spectacular views, including the nearby Campsie Fells and the distinct volcanic plug of Dumgoyne Hill.
- Walking Routes: There are two main walking opportunities:
- The Nature Trail: The shorter walk, which is a more user-friendly, aggregate path.
- The Muir Path: A wilder, longer loop that climbs onto the moorland. If you take this route, be prepared. It can be very boggy and muddy after rain, so stout footwear is highly recommended.
Wildlife & Botanical Highlights
The loch and reserve are rich in invertebrates and offer fantastic opportunities for birdwatching:
- Birds: Look out for wildfowl like the Tufted Duck, and especially the Whooper Swans that migrate here from Iceland to spend the winter. You might also spot breeding birds such as the Curlew and various warblers.
- Plants: The wetland areas support a variety of rare flora, including at least four species of orchids. In July, you can often see the delicate Water Lobelia flowering profusely in the shallow water.
Access & Other Uses
- Pets: Dogs are permitted on the reserve but must be kept on a lead or under very close control to protect breeding wildlife and ensure the comfort of other visitors.
- Fishing: You can fish in the loch, but you must have the correct permit beforehand.
There are benches positioned around the loch where you can simply sit and soak up the peace. I recommend this place, and it is even better if you drive.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much. Nature calms the soul.
DeleteNature is balm for the soul. A beautiful and true statement.
ReplyDeleteMy friend, you had the extraordinary fortune of meeting this woman.
Melody, I wish you a good Sunday!
I think you are the one that made this comment about nature being the balm of the soul, and it stuck. Indeed, that woman was God-sent, and she really comforted me. Happy Sunday.
DeleteA rather pretty area for going for walks. I'm amused at your gumboots and you walking in them. We don't have them down here, but farmers do or small children sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy going for a walk in places like this, and I did today, which I will be sharing tomorrow. The gumboots are called rainboots in my country, and in Scotland, they are called wellies. My dad used to have a lot of them as he is a petroleum engineer, and I know farmers use them, and kids, but it's for anyone who wants to protect their legs from the muddy paths or for rainy days.
DeleteThat looks like a great trip, Melody. How nice of the woman to drive you home.
ReplyDeletePeople can be kind, and that is why we should not give up on this world. She didn't have to, but she did. She is kind, and I pray God blesses her with a long life. She is such a strong, beautiful soul, and every piece of advice she gave me stuck.
DeleteHello Melody,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful pictures of this amazing area.

DeleteAn excellent place, Melody. It's similar to a Mediterannean place. And I loved the dog, my dear.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all these beautiful photos and the trip. Have a nice new week, Melody.
Youa are welcome, Giannis.

ReplyDeleteLike the majority of Scottish places you are taking us to, Loch Ardinning Wildlife Reserve looks and sounds absolutely amazing! You are so, so lucky to live in an area as rich in natural splendour as you do! xxx
I am blessed indeed. Thank you so much.
DeleteIt sounds amazing and I liked all the damn good photos
ReplyDeleteThank you so much
DeleteNature is the balm of the soul... I love that! I'll have to write that down to remember it. This wildlife reserve looks like the perfect place to sooth the soul. So peaceful and inviting. I can see why you enjoyed your time there. And it's lovely to know that the bus drivers are super helpful should one get their directions a little turned around. Sounds like great hospitality all the way around.
ReplyDeleteThey were all super helpful. I am glad you enjoy reading. Thank you so much.
DeleteIt is a beautiful part of the world.
ReplyDeleteYoua re right. Thank you Jenn.

DeleteThe blue sky is impossibly blue. What a beautiful place for an angel encounter.
ReplyDeleteIndeed a beautiful place for such an encounter.
DeleteWow.. what a wonderful experience. Scotland is stunning.
ReplyDeleteHi Hena, I had such a beautiful time on this place. Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
It is accessible by bus, and one of the best things (like I mentioned in my post) is eating by the Loch. I really love to do that. I always loved the feel of just being alone and eating by the Loch.
DeleteA spa day for your soul. I love that. I believe that there are angels on earth. They find us when we most need them. Yours found you at this beautiful, almost sacred place. I'm so grateful. I hope that the heaviness in your heart and soul that brought you there and was lifted somewhat has lifted completely and stays that way. And I am grateful that you didn't turn back, despite the challenges to get there. You received a great gift this day, one to cherish in your heart forever.
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanie,
DeleteI think you just gave me another word I can use: going into nature is a "spa day" for my soul. Excellent! Thank you so much.
I also believe that God sends us angels to guide us and minister to us in different ways. I'm grateful, and I do not take that for granted. I have had this kind of experience before, and such an event just makes me understand that all I need to do is always speak the word and call upon God, and He will answer me. The best part is that the heaviness in my soul was lifted. I learned a lot, like I mentioned in my post, and I'm glad that I was able to share with everyone. And yes, I agree with you. I received a gift that day—the gift of being able to speak to someone. What I'll say is that God is wonderful. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteI thank God for such an encounter. Thank you so much.
DeleteFico contente que tenhas encontrado a paz e orientação que precisavas no momento.
ReplyDeleteO lugar é inspirador.
Te desejo ótima semana .
Thank you so much, Cesar.
DeleteYour photos are very beautiful. Very nice reservation.
ReplyDeleteYou had bad and very good experiences along the way.
I carry along just the good experiences, and I'm glad I was able to visit this place. Thank you.
DeleteI really like your story. I smiled when I read it. I started imagining it. It's a truly wonderful place. I'm glad you had such a good time. I've also loved nature since I was a child. Hugging trees is very, very pleasant. I love picturesque landscapes. Mountains, lakes, or meadows can be truly amazing. I see you love such places too. I'm sure you'd love where I live. There's a nature park nearby. I live in the small Polish mountains. Maybe you'll visit this place someday? I wish you all the best and may this autumn be a beautiful autumn. You're wonderful and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteOh dear! You just mentioned everything I love. Staying in a Polish mountain area is like my dream. I love the countryside, the calmness, the trees, the lakes... I just love everything calm that comes with the countryside, from the animals to the peace to the fireplace. It just gives me calm. It just screams calm. I love it! I hope I'm able to visit your area someday. Thank you so much, Klaudia!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Julia.
DeleteWhat a beautiful place. Your outfit is perfection and giving loch fall vibes. How wonderful to have met that angel on your journey! Her puppy is adorable!
ReplyDeleteI got the jumper from Primark. I even went back to check if they had more colors I would like, but I didn't really like the ones I saw. But I have gotten so many compliments about it. Thank you so much.
I am glad my story moved you. I shared it to remind someone to ask the holy spirit, who is our comforter, and they will be comforted. I also wish in my country we could walk in parks and nature without fear, but I hope one day the government focuses on security. I had a wonderful encounter and I am still surprised about it, and I will keep sharing it. Thank you.
DeleteI can agree with you. Nature can be a great cure for our problems.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day!
Angelika
I am a testimony that God has given us nature to calm our souls. We just need to stop the rush and worries and relax.
Thank you so much.
DeleteWow, what a powerful story, Melody! Thanks very much for sharing. It was extremely personal and touching. It has been over one month since you took these pictures – a lot of time for things to settle and pain to go away.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what made your heart ache, but I do hope that at this time you feel so much better.
At the time of darkness, you chose the best option you could – acting on your sixth sense, you chose nature and its healing powers. I'm glad that you did not burrow yourself at your home like a small terrified bunny, but decided to go outside and face "the big bad wolf". You showed your strength and the world (God) rewarded you for it. I am glad that in times of sorrow you found this kind soul, this beautiful angel who lifted you up, when you needed it the most.
Take care and have a nice, relaxind day.
Your comment made me feel even more healed, and I am happy that I got to share this with everyone. I hope it inspires someone to try the healing power of nature when they feel down. It changed my thinking, and I know that we have God by our side. We just need to speak, and He will answer us. Burdens are lifted at Calvary, and Calvary is where we decide to call upon the Holy Spirit to uplift our burdens, and they get lifted. Take care of yourself too.
